The '00 4runner has the factory installed stereo. This is a single cd/cassette/radio unit. It is not a very good one but its better than nothing. my wife says that when she inserts a cd it ejects it almost immediately. i'll take a look at it sometime today but meanwhile does anyone know anything about these things and what might be causing this problem?
no...its never been cleaned. that would be my first step.

If it's started recently it could be condensation on the lens (which makes the disc appear to be unreadable). Does it work at the end of a reasonably long drive when the car's warmed up?

Does it do it on all cd's.. or onle some.

next question. does it work fine on most commercially manufactured cd's.. but not on newer CDR that have been burned by a computer or cd/dvr player?

Reason i ask is I have a 98 dodge ram with factory radio. It's cd player will read 99% of store bought cd's. I have found if I get a store bought CD that is a combination disc.. IE.. it has audio on it.. but also has a track of computer data on it.. it will eject it 9 out of 10 times. Sometimes i can get it to play by sticking it in and hitting hte track forward button a couple tracks.. that usually makes it catch.. like I say.. 9 out of 10 times.. it won't work.. but if i keep at it.. it will play with no problems till I eject it.

Same issue with cd's i burn on my pc... if they are the new 80minute/700mb style.

Oddly enough.. i still have some of the older 640mb /72or 73 minute cd's laying around.. and if i burn one of them. the truck takes them fine.

they do make a cd with a lens cleaner on it.. but unless it is just some dust.. it doesn't work real well.

good luck, and post back what you find.

i don't know....once it fails we don't try again until the next time we drive it. but your suggestion is also in line with the lens being dirty.

i put the cleaning cd in the player. i then put a music cd in (squeeze). the cd went in and stayed in but did not play. there was a quiet intermittent hum...not very noticeable. so i didn't have the cd ejecting problem that my wife described at all. just a cd player that doesn't play the cd. the cassette player (alanis morrisette) and radio (npr)work fine.
my wife is concerned about this because I'm about to start my tax season job and that means I get her '07 civic and she has to use the 4runner.
