Does anyone have a Vanguard ventless fireplace?

Curious as to how you like them? Anything bad to say?

Since I have an existing fireplace not in use, thought I'd go this route for back up heat (primary heat being a heat pump).

I have a Vanguard vent free fireplace in my basement. We have a regular fireplace w/chimney on the first floor and the house foundation is "bumped out" in the area under it creating an "alcove" so I inserted the fireplace insert there. It's great - makes the basement real cozy in the winter.

Just make sure you have enough free movement of air to support the burning and dissipate the water vapor.

Since you have a regular fireplace where you're going to put the insert, though - why not go with a direct-vent unit instead of a vent-free?

I'll be installing an variable speed air handler with a heat pump for primary heat. The fan will be running 24/7 for air movment, even when I'm using the fireplace.

Going vent free due to cost and PITA factor for venting. Numbers wise, I could heat the first floor with that R410A heat pump and strip heat alone, however, I just like the idea of having gas for back up heat if I want it (millivolt system as well on the fireplace). Vent free fireplace is the easiest, cheapest way to go. I probably won't end up running that fireplace more than 15 days out of the year.
