Went to pick it up today and the trailer I borrowed was too small (short) I did notice that when driving the 4047 with the backhoe attached the front end was very light, I had a hard time steering while maneuvering to load up. Is that normal with the backhoe attached? I guess I could have used the split brakes to help out but was just surprised at how light the front end was.

Now I'll be picking it up Friday.

Are the rear tires filled with liquid for ballast? You could remove any liquid in the tires (if present) and/or add a weight bar or wheel weights up front, but that sounds more like a band aid.

On my XU there is a difference in weight/balance, but not substantial enough to impair maneuverability/steering when the BH is mounted... no ballast in my rear tires since that and backhoe implements aren't recommended together.

Sorry the new tractor isn't home on the range with you... hopefully the next trip goes better. Was going to dig a septic for some friends but having trailer woes myself. Good luck!

I didn't get a manual with this tractor can anyone tell me how to tell what position the differential lock is in?

On mine you press the lever down with your right heel. It is spring loaded and will pop back up when it releases. I've only used it once when I thought I was going to get stuck in mud. After engaging it, when the wheels stop it will pop back up.

Thanks. When I was loading it to bring it home I had a hard time steering...I thought it was because the backhoe was so heavy. Now I'm wondering if the differential lock is on. I think it is all the way down, I'll have to look in the morning.

Mine is R series so I'm assuming the 41/47 work the same way ... if not hopefully someone else with one will chime in. I looked at my manual (which the pictures really don't match the tractor) so hopefully the text will help. Here is the page that talks about it:

Thanks, I went out and looked and my lock pedal is definitely all the way down...any ideas on how to get it to release? I hope this isn't a big problem...I didn't really notice when loading the tractor on the trailer, it was only 50 feet I had to drive it to get it on the trailer. I'm wondering if the seller knew about this.

Don't know. I've only used mine once and it popped back up by itself if I remember right. The manual kind of suggests doing some kind of dance with clutch and brake. Are your split brakes joined? There is a little pin above them that bind the two pedals together.
