Hi--
I am looking to buy a CC lawn tractor. I have about 2 acres to mow and trim work around fences; some of it is sloped pretty good; also want to use the tractor to do odds and end jobs--pulling a 2-wheeled Gravely cart, etc. I orignially was planning to buy a new CC 2554 but the dealer I am working with (where I also recently purchased a NH T2210) has 2 used CC 3200 series.

One is a 3240 ('01) with 430hours and asking $3500. The other is a 3200 ('07) with 153hours and asking $5600. My budget is about $4500. I really like the DIFF LOCK that the 3200 has which is why I am so interested in it (plus the power steering may be nice too!).

My question is what is inthe buying of a used tractor--am I buying someone else's problem? Will I end up paying more in the end due to major breakdowns or replacing parts on an older (9year old) tractor?

Any thoughts or advise? I have test operated the CC 2554 and will test run the 3200s tomorrow. I have been through most of the other brands of lawn&garden tractors and have settled on the CC (for now).

Thanks in advance!!!

Thanks. I have already looked at Craig's list for close to home locations. I am building a relationship with the dealer and it is some one who has a good honest reputation in the area.

In any event, the question remains--what are the cautions in buying a used tractor from anyone? I feel if I have arelationship with the dealer I can go there--not to someone located in NY. What is the life expectancy for one of these tractors? Is it money well spent with 400 plus hours and 9 year olds tractor; OR do I get the '07 and pay more now but may have less in repairs in the short term?

Thanks!

hummm all I would say is don't like the diff lock affect your decision. I've had 2 tractors with a diff lock...meh!

Looking at the higher end CC myself for a mower application at my son's. My concern in buying a high priced, late model is the immediate comparison with new and great offers and financing. That is always my struggle. If a used one is 50% worn out, and I face tons of repairs on that older machine, but it is 60% of the price of new, with no repairs for 2-3 years, the math never works out.

When buying used, this math issue forces me to look for absolute steals. Once in a great while, one does find them. Best regards.

I've owned several 2000 and 3000 series machines, and certainly prefer the 3000 series with heavier duty components, hydraulic lift, and power steering. Once you have it, you're spoiled and can never go backwards....
Between the 3240 and 3200, I'd definitely choose the 3200. To me, the diff lock made a huge difference when plowing snow. Unsure if that is a factor for you....another time it comes in handy is on a slope, the added traction is a plus.
The way I look at it is....the less hours it has, typically the less problems you should encounter....153 hours is pretty low. Remind him new machines are 6K, although that doesn't include the deck....OK, remind him of the present economy. Problem is, this is prime lawn mower selling time.
I bought my dad a gt3200 with a new plow & hydraulic angle, but he never uses it.....keeps using his old machine....so I might get it back or sell it....
anyways good luck and let us know your findings!

ive been told that the new 3200 series does not have as many grease fittings as the older 3200s. that theyve been cheapened considerably. i really like the 3240. for the price difference, id be looking at that. i got my 3185 for a steal, but ive had to replace alot of little things. pto belts, ram, tires, little things. i will say, once you have the nice options of the 3k, you wont want to go back to a 2k. if i had to start all over, i would have held out for a super. theyre a little bigger than the 3k.
