Personally, I run wide open when running in heavy grass like that. You aren't going to hurt the mowers or the tractor, the difference in fuel usage is negligible and running wide open will push a little more air past the radiator to cool the engine better as well as pumping a little more coolant. Now, it might be worth dropping into low range if its easier to control your speed that way, but the engine would be wide open on our tractors.
