two gang cultipacker question

Hi- I'm working on an old 6 foot double cultipacker it sat out in the field for who knows how long and the wood tongue disappeared. I'm building a tongue so I can use it while renovating a small pasture. Question about the rear gang though. it pivots off the front so that it can (I assume) follow the contours of the land better. However, there is a bracket on the rear gang that seems to be designed to bolt to the end of the tongue. I hooked up my wood tongue this way and it basically locks the two gangs together, not sure if this is what I want? anyone seen a cultipacker like this? should i unhook the tongue from the rear bang and let it float? As it is now, I'm sure the rear gang will be up in the air half he time. Any advice appreciated!

For normal operations in tilled dirt, yes, I would unhook the second gang from the hitch. I believe you have options with that type of hitch. If you wanted the additional weight on the first gang, in rough ground, or for a transport situation on a paved road, leave it hooked up. Or use it unhooked as a hitching point for a drag or small seed spreader.

Personally i'd mount a 3pt to the front gang. Use a chain or something to lift up the rear gang for transport if needed. Let it float the rest of the time.
