HighBeam and Bill177, I virtually always have my concealed carry "Baby Glock in .45ACP" when I leave the house but it isn't the weapon of choice for varmint plinking (well small 4 legged varmints anyway.) My comments about tractor-gun totin' relate to other weapons more suitable for small varmints.
For close work I like the Walther P-22 and with the suppressor it is subsonic with all available .22 loads so it is stealthy which allows follow up shots at critters in groups or if the first round isn't on target. I have a Ruger MK II and a Ruger 22-45 with removable suppressors that are dead accurate but not as much fun for casual target of opportunity type shooting. I prefer them for punching paper.
The Ruger 10-22 with suppressor and a decent scope lets me take a crow out of a flock and not disturb his flock mates. I have a nice 22-250, better suited for a long distance 200-300 yd first shot kill but it is definitely not stealthy and you only get one shot at a flock. Of course the black feather explosion when you reach out and touch Heckle or Jeckle is some reward for only getting one shot before the flock finds other environs more suited to their purpose for a while.
I find when I don't have a camera it always seems like there are so many photo ops and when I don't have an appropriate weapon the varmints present themselves at easy ranges. I know this is subjective and not really true but it seems that way. Anyway, I will be arranging a way to carry the 10-22 and the P-22 in the tractor.
Bill177, it sounds like you live in a dangerous area. I'd be installing an intruder alert or alarm system that would send me a radio signal to let me know about "guests."
