Turned my BX into a wood processor over the weekend

So, after a day of cutting up 7 cords of tree length firewood I am mad at myself for not ordering a backhoe thumb earlier. With the thumb and a root hook I was able to pick up each of the 14-16 foot logs to waist height where I then got off and picked up the Stihl and starting cutting. Took all day but all the firewood is cut and ready for the splitter.

After 5 years of getting log length firewood delivered this has to be the easiest time I had cutting the wood up. Sure beats dragging the wood out of the pile with the backhoe or chains.

I cut mine to length as I go through the stack of logs, just bucking and rolling them out. Have them stacked on a slight hill above the splitter. Roll the blocks right to the splitter, split, and stack on pallets. No hoe

I have about a cord of live oak that fell in my yard Thanksgiving night and I'm still swinging my axe trying to split it. (not too many folks in my neck of the woods need firewood for heat) I used the Thumb on my B26 to handle a lot of it, but the b26 doesn't have quite enough arse to manage the larger pieces... I could afford to buy a splitter, but I'm having a hard time justifying it when I don't even have a fireplace in my house. The rental places don't have them or if they do they're in terrible shape and would take me just as long to split as an hour a day here and there...

Is the splitter a 3ph mounted PTO driven unit?

The splitter is a stand alone unit not PTO. I actually had some help splitting some of it while I was cutting it so, it was a good team effort!

Yep, if you have a stand alone unit and helpers, you can get the job done faster. It does mean more money invested and another internal combustion engine to maintain, however. That's why I try to have as many things powered by the PTO or electricity as is practical. It is such a pain when old gas engines won't start.

If you can see my avatar I find the backhoe very useful in picking up sticks. You just have to be careful as you are cutting them down to kund of cut evenly on both sides!

Well those pictures look pretty much identical to what I was doing, except I had a tendency to swing the boom to one side so the cuts would be closer to the pile for the splitter.

Now if I could only split and stack all 7 cords in one day........

You know, with the title of your thread, you really had my curiosity going. I have seen some sweet attachments that people make themselves on here, but I thought, if you made yourself a processor for a BX, this will really take the cake....

Wow, that is all in one! I just cut the logs on the ground, throw the rounds in a pile, and split and stack when i get the time. We just cut a bunch of trees last Saturday, I think between 10-20 cord and when it comes to cleaning up all the limbs and moving all the logs, I will be using my grandpa's skidsteer to do all that. :thumbsup: It's a lot of work but it is also fun work. :thumbsup:
