TSC in my area has their CountyLine Multi-fit post hole digger power unit, Stk. No. 2100220 for compact cat. 1 & 2 on sale for $50 off. I don't dig many holes so I figured it fits my needs at a reasonable price. My Kubota B2920 is 29HP, and approx. 21HP at PTO. I live on gumbo clay, no rocks, here in Texas, and am thinking the 9" auger would best fit my needs. Any experience with this unit, and or anyone using one of these? On a B2920 enough tractor for 9"? Comments, opinions? Thanks in advance for your input.

I have a Leinbach L7200JR on my B2920 and the same gumbo clay (located in Bellville). I've used a 9" and 12" auger with no problems at all. We put in about 200 posts. It doesn't take much PTO power to run a PD and you need to run them slowwwww! If you get it stuck, you'll need a big pipe wrench to manual unscrew it and turn it back out. Also, with our drought conditions right now and dry ground, you really need to wait until we get some rain before trying to auger holes. There is no way that auger will dig into this conrete hard clay under these conditions. As final advice, make sure the TSC auger is really for compact tractors. If it is a full size one, you will not have enough ground clearance to raise the auger off the ground. Have fun:thumbsup:!

I am fairly sure that those are in fact made by Speeco.
I had one for a while, but didn't use it enough to keep it.
That price seems high, it has been down to $350 this year in New Hampshire.
Hmmm, if you don't drill that many holes buying it JUST BECAUSE it is $50 off may not make much sense - but, your money, your choice (-:

Unless you are sinking Sono tubes I think you will find 9 inches to be one heckuva big hole, 6 inches is probably more generally useful for... errrr, lets see... POSTS, yeah.
Yes your tractor can almost certainly handle it, but the bigger the hole the more you have to back fill afterwards and the looser the post is until everything settles - and it settles more.
Bigger augers can get stuck more easily too.

ONE thing with PhDs is that you don't have to run them at 540, I doubt that I ran mine much over 200 (engine idle + a bit).
ANOTHER is that you don't want to let them screw into the ground, i.e. don't just push your position control all the way forward and wait for the auger to disappear into the ground.
"Allow" the auger to go down a few inches - and bring up soil - then "allow" it to go down a bit more - and bring up soil, etc.

IMHO I would not buy a less than 9"-er if I were you.Decent price if you are getting 50 bucks off. Those units come with Comer gear boxes.Lots of bang for the buck. You will need to fill gearbox oil 80/90 to correct level because everyone I've ever seen from TSC COMES SHIPPED DRY(no big deal).

Thanks for the input so far. I did a quick stop by my local TSC to look at it, but they only had one, and it did look kind of large. That one also happened to have a damaged gear box. Appeared to be a heavy duty cast iron gear box. I'm going to go back there tomorrow when I have more time to see if I can find out more re: dimensions, any more coming in etc. It's really hard to tell anything when a unit is laying in a crate disassembled.
Bellville, TX is very much the same soil type I have. I'm in what's called St. Charles clay near Needville, TX.

I don't know how big a B2929 is but I think you will be ok. I have a woods PHD35 with a 42" long 9" auger on my SC2400. I have to watch though as when I have it lifted to the highest point, I have about 6 inches of travel between the ground and the bottom of the auger. So there are times when I drag the ground.

I have a B7800 which is almost identical in size to your tractor. My PHD has both a 9" auger for line posts and a 12" auger for corner posts. My tractor can turn these two augers easily.

For my use - digging about 100 holes for 4X4 fence posts in the Connecticut woods - a 6" would be pretty much a waste of time. My 9" auger is just fine. Between the medium sized potatos in the ground, anywhere from 3" to gigantic, the tree roots that I must abosultely find and drilling on a slope my holes are seldom true vertical. The extra play the 9" hole gives me usually allows me to get a post down 3' and true it up.

If I remember my math right a 4X4 will measure 4*1.4 or 5.6 across the diagonal - not a lot of extra room for error with a 6" auger.

I saw that TSC ad, and wondered how deep it would dig. My PHD is a Land Pride PD10 (the smallest one they make) and only has a 25" auger. I would really like to sink at 30" holes, but am not sure how much travel I have on the B2920 3PH. You may have guessed, I haven't used it yet but intend to in the next month or so.

I found an older Speeco (cat1) in the local shopper paper, with 9 and 12" augers. Needed a lot of TLC, paint, lube etc.

Cleaned up real nice. Even though I'm a lousy painter.

Don't know the model, but uses standard 42" long augers with 2" diameter drive on the gear head.

Was a little less than 1/2 price of anything on sale, even including the gas to get it.

Using it on an older 24hp JD. You should be good to go.

Enjoy

I bought my TSC PHD a few years back. It's a Speeco. I have a 12" and a 6" auger. My Kubota B7610 has 18 HP to the PTO. Digs with no problems at all. Keep a few shear bolts on hand if you have rocks like we do here in New England. I've done more 12" holes than anything else. Sonotubes are fun now!
