Truss for pole building question..

ok guys, im ready to order the trussess for my 24x30 pole building and have a major question that was brought to my attention when i was pricing the trussuess at lowes..ok, naturally on the eave walls i have truss supports to hold up the trussuess, BUT, on the gable ends there is no truss supports, so when i was getting the trussess priced, the guy asked me if i just wanted to get normal load bearing trussess to use on the gable ends also since there is no truss support to take the load..you know, normally you have gable end trussess that are made just to nail your siding onto but are not load bearing trussuess like the ones used through the middle of the building, so i told him i didnt know since he had just brought it to my attention, and also, on the one gable end, im putting in a 16 foot garage door, so should i just forget about getting the gable end trussess and just use the load bearing trussess all the way through the building?

This may be wrong, but here is what I'm running into with my garage 30X48. I used all load bearing trusses, didn't even think about the gable trusses at the end when I ordered. I have my trusses up and I'm in the process of putting the sheeting on for the roof. I built 2' overhangs on the end trusses before I set them. When I get ready to do my siding I'm going vinyl over OSB, now the problem that I have is since I put the overhangs on, I don't have anywhere to tack the OSB to /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gifI'm going to have to scab some 2x4s against the truss to give the OSB something to tie into. I would think you would have the same problem with metal. If I were to do it over again I would have ordered gable trusses.

Oh well, live and learn. Nothing that a few 2x4s and some nails can't take care of. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I know trusses trust me. ..I can't find a pic of one but a "structural gable " is built like you others and has the 2x4 upright plated right into it.

That would work - as you know /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif, but unfortunately when I ordered mine I didn't know about them, still don't know much about construction in general so I was more describing that he didn't want the same problem that I have. Not that is a big deal, just more time & aggravation that I wouldn't have had to deal with. This has been bugging me every since October when I put them up and realized my problem. It'll probably bug me until I get the problem corrected. Guess I'm not has tough as Boondox, if it is below 35-40 I'm not outside working on the garage. It'll wait for spring.

If you're using metal to cover the gable/sides you aren't going to fasten it to studs on 16" centers. Either type truss you decide to use at the gable ends you're still going to need some lathing nailed horizonally at 16" or 24" on center to fasten the metal to I would think. I don't know about the bracing in the trusses you're buying, but the ones I built for my shop had bracing that was sufficient for me to nail my lathing to. Just used the same truss throughout. I don't understand what difference it makes in the truss if you're going to have a 16' garage door in one end???

I'm confused, what do you mean by truss supports?
A gable end truss should be made to have the same loading specs as the common trusses, it is just a different design with vertical studding (16" O.C. is common). Usually all the trusses will set on the top plate of the studwall or top plate of the beam if pole barn type construction. The gable end truss would simply be the first & last truss, located on the ends.
Over the 16' door you may want to put in a LVL header which wont sag under it's own weight like a KD header can. No additional support should be needed under the gable truss as it should be made to the same spec as the others.

I dont know, all i know is that any of the load bearing trussess ive ever seen have the 'V' shaped braces in them and the gable end trussess always had either straight verticle braces or straight horizontal braces so that way you could nail the sheathing to without your nailing pattern getting off from the side walls..now, the guy told me that if i used the gable end trussess that wouldnt be a good idea since they arent meant to hold a load like the load bearing trussess used in throughout the rest of the building and the pole barn doesnt have headers to bear the load of the gable end truss on the gable end walls like a regular 2x4 framed garage does, and he is right, so dont i pretty much have to use the rugular load bearing trussess with the 'V' shaped braces at the gable ends also? only thing about that is like stated above, how do i fasten my metal to it with the 'V' braces going this way and that way? BTW, when i say truss supports, i am speaking of the double 2x12's that run down the 2 walls that the truss sets on, like the top plate on a 2x4 studded garage..

The gable truss should be & can be made to support the same loading as the rest of the trusses. The only reason I can think of to not use a gable truss is when you want a window in the gable. You cannot cut or modify the truss. In that case it would make sense to buy a common truss & stud around the desired opening.

i SEE..DONT KNOW WHY THE GUY AT LOWES WAS SAYING THAT, DO YOU GUYS SEE WHAT I WAS SAYING THOUG? SAYING THAT THE THING HAD TO SUPPORT ITSELF AND A LOAD BEING THAT THE GABLE WALLS DONT HAVE THE TOP PLATE TO SUPPORT EVERYTHING ON THE GABLE WALLS LIKE A 2X4 STUDDED BUILDING WOULD, SEE WHAT IM SAYING? woops, sorry about the caps, must have locked it, anyways, so i can get the gable trussess to hold a load but can i get them with the horizontal peices to match the pattern of the girts to nail to? I know most gable trussess ive seen have the verticle studs and not the horizontal like a pole building would need..?
