Hello to all,

A friend gave me a 2021 Toro 21" "self-propelled" lawn mower. Filled her w gas and she started immediately. The self propelled feature worked fine at first, meaning pull the handle back and it would go. Gradually, the self-propelled feature became less operable. I would pull back the bar all the way and t would not or barely go, then I would have to push it and it sometimes want again and sometimes it would not. Any suggestions on troubleshooting?

I did look in the ops manual from Toro online, and nothing at all about troubleshooting. Went to youtube and it mainly emphasized checking the belt btw blade shaft and self-propelled motor area. The mower is at a weekend property so I will not have access until mid or later in the week But, will answer any questions i can. Appreciate your suggestions.

Thank you,
tstex

Does this mower have the rubber friction wheel drive? If yes watch the aluminum drive vs driven rubber friction wheel to see which one is slowing when mower slows. If aluminum look at the drive belt, if rubber friction you need to look at friction wheel components. The friction wheel is a replaceable item. Check the bearings on the hex shaft for friction wheel since they can go bad also.

I don't know Toro model numbers. Mine has a belt to drive the blade and another to propel the unit. The belt to propel the unit is only good for a couple years before it starts slipping. The two belts are almost but not quite the same length and not cheap from Toro. Get the number off the belt and look on eBay for a replacement.

Thx road. Is there a way to discern if the belt is bad by certain west & tear or similar? How much is a Toro belt?

Only way I know is if you can remove a cover or shield and watch the belt while mowing.

I am not familiar w the mower enough to answer the Aluminum or Rubber driven. The Toro model# is 21352. Not sure if there's a parts list or diagram that can assist w your ques. Next time i sm out, i will check & take some pics.

Parts diagram I found shows a single belt going to a gear box on rear axle. I couldn’t tell for sure what engages the drive from the diagrams but it looked like removing a cover would expose the gear box and drive belt so you could potentially watch what happens when you engage drive and hold back on handle so it loads the drive up.

My error on friction drive, that is used on Snapper mowers.

Check to see if cable has slipped thru the bracket on the handle. Adjustment of this cable in that bracket is how max speed is regulated
