Trespassing signs, etiquette, good & bad neighbors

Here's the quote:
"In my entire life, including living at home as a child not once has someone came unannounced that my family or me wanted to see."

That, to me, means exactly what it says

Grandma, what are you doing here?

Grandma had enough respect both for herself and us to call ahead and make sure we would be home and didn稚 have plans to go anyplace.
It痴 real funny to me that no one ever seemed to not be able to call ahead back then before the cell phone but in today痴 world with a phone in most peoples pockets, chargers built into thier cars they find it impossible to call ahead?
The key words here are RESPECT too many people don稚 understand it, and certainly don稚 practice it if they do!
The second is TRESPASSING as defined in the dictionary and anyone with any RESPECT would use the word as intended so that others would be able to return that respect when they need or want it.
Instead they pretend to not understand he meaning of a very simply defined word so they can try and have thier way because they would rather be right no matter how wrong hey are. They would rather try and take a cheap shot at someone like me by stretching what I said to sound as if I am anti social or some kind of mean militant.

Sorry folks you got he wrong person here!
I won稚 give, My friends and family will still show respect by calling ahead as will I when I feel like visiting. We won稚 be intimidated, insulted and we won稚 be duped into being part of the demise of our culture because it痴 convient for you and your ego!

Yeah, you wouldn't want grandma dissing you with no respect by stopping in to say hi unannounced.

My dad gave my sister a few acres in one of his fields, and she still lives there. Not only did they both drop by regularly and unannounced, they didn’t even knock to come in.

Some here would consider that breaking and entering.

I gave my neighbor their own combo for my door lock.

/ Trespassing signs, etiquette, good & bad neighbors #185
I think the point is that no trespassing means you do not enter unless you were invited. For example you order something that is going to be delivered via UPS. The UPS driver can enter because they are invited.

Dude going door to door selling encyclopedias, religion, or whatever, nope sorry you do not enter I did not invite you.

Family/Friends going to be different depending on the situation. For me family and friends have an open invite and they know it. Other people do not feel that way about their friends/family. That is their choice.

The last thing in the world I want is NEEDY people showing up. I hadn't seen an old friend in over thirty years. He called me last week and by chance he lived in the Area where I was going to an auction on Saturday. I welcomed him to come by the auction. Next thing, it seems he doesn't have transportation, and wants me to change my plans (and that of another friend who was with me) to go see him. No way.

If I make plans two weeks from now for a friend to come by, you can set your watch by his arrival. I like that. Gives me ample time to put the dogs in, lower the gates, turn off the alarms and kill the juice to the electric fence.,

Some interesting viewpoints, but on my land, only my opinion and the law matters. My "No Trespassing" signs are at the end of my driveway, one on each side. I have been known to have a trespasser come to the house and when I went out, I walked to the end of the driveway and checked the signs to make sure they were still there.. then ask the trespasser how I can help, should I call 911? Must be an emergency to break the law over..

Nobody is telling other folks to change their practices. Just a few folks commenting that the "don't want anyone to stop by" mindset expressed is hard to relate to. To each their own. Carry on.

Trespass laws here are set by the provinces, and vary greatly. Lawful reasons include to "communicate", but within reason.

Criminal trespass is federal law but really only comes into play at night (9pm-6am) if there is a residence on the property. Best you can do is remove someone trespassing. And using force...you are better off using the 3 S's: Shoot, Shovel, and Shut-up.

Actually we wouldn稚 have wanted Grandma to have to drive all the way here only to find no one is home, or we are just pulling out of the driveway.
What is really fascinating is that it was my Grandmother who is responsible for teaching us all to never show up unannounced unless it痴 an emergency and everyone here is trying to se her as the victim! Just goes to show how off today痴 society really is.

The idea of respect shown towards the person being visited is totally a good thing and to be commended. Very understandable to desire that. And I agree that stuff like that is being lost. The part that I don't relate to is the offense taken when someone doesn't show that respect. I'd still want to see my neighbor if he dropped by unannounced, though calling ahead would be preferred. I'm never going to be irritated by him. If it wasn't a good time I'd say it and he'd come another time. I guess it is part of me being a really tolerant person... I know too many people who take offense at other peoples' actions and it doesn't make a lot of sense to me because I don't get offended easily.

One of the few justifications I would have to own a backhoe...LOL

BTW, a few years ago, guns were drawn on a number of people by one of the local land owners. BAD JU-JU there. That guy wound up leaving and things have settled down.

I think you might have misunderstood me. If you or someone else has offered an open invitation to your friends, family or neighbor that is just fine with me. I haven’t and won’t. If one showed without first calling or being somehow a planned visit I would politely discuss it with them and it would probably never happen again.

What I have issue with is those who take people who they don’t know just strolling in past the signs with excuses so lightly. Such as a salesman, or someone you never met before asking for permission to hunt your property. The numbers posted on the sign are for them. Call leave a message, if I feel inclined I will call if not the sign was put up just for you. Your desire to sell me something or to hunt on my land is not as important to me as It is to you, so until that phone call does come No Trespassing.

I guess we live in a place where it's really common to be out and about and drive past our friends' and relatives' houses. For example, our in-laws live about 5-6 miles away, yet we probably drive within a mile of their house at least 2-3 times a week. Likewise, they drive near ours 4-5 times per week. So one of us or the other would just stop in.

When I was a kid, my father built a house for his parents right next door to ours when they got old, so it was also common to just walk in to each others' houses. Friends on the block also just knocked and walked in. It has always been like that for our friends and family. I hope it always remains that way.

Just be careful about that approach if you don't know the reason for the person being there, because 21 years ago if you would of done that to me while I was working you would of have two options of either going back to the house and not interfere or be charged with a felony and potentially serve 1-3 years in prison.

Re: Trespassing signs, etiquette, good & bad neighbors

I get a kick out of those who criticize us for wanting our privacy, safety and property secure from trespassers.
This is simple like my signs say

哲o Tresspassing
典his Means You
哲o Excusses
No Exceptions
哲o explinations納/QUOTE]

For some reason, hunters chasing a wounded animal think they are an exception.

If they are too close to a property line that they can't get off two shots they need to move back.

If I am unfortunate enough to wound an animal and I have a blood trail that goes onto a neighbor's property, I will ask permission to search for it. It happened to me this year. I tracked it thru 3 neighbor's property. It barely crossed onto their land but still did, then worked back onto our place. Even my vegetarian neighbor who "LOVE our bucks and wish you didnt' hunt them" has given me permission. i

Re: Trespassing signs, etiquette, good & bad neighbors

"Nothing down here is worth your life"

Made a lot of people turn around.

The guy who rented at the end of my road, when I bought my place, had a deadhead flag and a sign that said "there is nothing here, worth dying over". I thought it was an interesting mix of signals

So we want to know what job gives you the right to be above the law. A few who thought thier jobs did that out here have found themselves in conflict and now understand they can not do what they once thought they could.

I have a neighbor that bought up all the property at the end of our roadway easement and put 4 rental houses on it. The renters and their guests are constant and lost guests were continuously driving down my 500 ft drive and turning around in my front yard. This happened most often after dark and frequently after midnight. I had no choice but to install gates and openers. I gave the gate code to the fire department, police, and electric co-op.

Problem solved!

She wasn't happy when I insisted she pay 4 shares on our road maintenance. She wanted us to split the cost per property owner. I told her per household was the only fair way to asses the cost. In hindsight I should have asked her to pay part of my gates and openers.
