Traction Tree pulling traction: loaded tires or ballast?

/ Tree pulling traction: loaded tires or ballast? #31
No matter what you do, its worth it to load the rear tires, especially R4's. Before I got my hoe, I used to try and dig around the bsae a bit with the FEL, then push or pull. I did find that hooking the chain to the 3pth and putting a bit of lift to it sometimes helped. DON'T try this unless you have HST and can control the tension with precission.
I've also pulled stubborn root systems by using the 4x4 and a HEAVY (one inch) nylon rope that will stretch with a running start, popping the root ball into the air. This requires a SOLID hitch point on the vehicle and at least 20' of rope. This system will exert more force on the tree than you will achieve with an 8000lb winch, but DON'T use any chain that you might break when hooking to the tree.
