Tractor
6210 john deere
i just bought a 6210 john deere cab tractor with 640 loader. when i got home with it, i started pulling a sub soiler after about 30 to 45 min the transmission temp light started blinking at me. i killed the tractor waited about 1 min and restarted the tractor after 10 mins light started blinking again. any ideals??

I'll admit, I dont even know what a JD 6210 looks like, but I bet is a hydro...correct?

If it has low range, make sure you are using it. Look for the transmission cooler and make sure it is not plugged with grass, mud, etc. Pulling heavy draft impliments is not the strong point of hydro transmissions.

No it has a syncroplus transmission

Welcome to TBN, twhite85. Those sub-soiler's pull "hard"!! Not many other implements pull as hard as that... plow, disc harrow, chisel plow - are a grunt, too - but a sub-soiler is in a class by itself!

If you can't drop a gear and go a bit slower and you've already hit the radiators - engine, air conditioner and transmission - with the air compressor... well, that's about all you can do besides get a smaller sub soiler or set it shallower in the ground and do several passes.

Are the rears filled or have wheel weights - duals? Oh yeah, hope you're not just shutting the tractor off while hot... very hard on turbochargers (bearings) and not real good overall for the engine, either. Temp will ramp up above shutdown point without coolant circulation - better to let it just idle for 15 minutes or so.

No it is a manual transmission I think. It also got hot dragging the pasture with 3 old tractor tires

I just looked up your tractor, you should not be having any problem with a subsoiler (you probably know that already). Sorry, I just assumed you had a compact tractor like so many on here.

I assume you checked the trans fluid. Next, change the filter. Does the trans feel hot to the touch? Since you just got the tractor, maybe someone put the wrong kind of fluid in it. Last, maybe the electrical circuit that works the light is faulty.

The transmission is not hot to the touch

Sorry I can be much more help. If the trans is cool to the touch, I would bet on a faulty circuit or temp sensor. BUT, that is a huge gamble without knowing for sure. I would personally get a shop manual (most can be purchased online in pdf format for a reasonable price). Then I would track down that sensor and see what I find. You could warm the sensor and see what temperature kicks the light on, or if it just comes on for no reason at all. A call to the service department at a good dealer would be a good place to start too. Good luck.

The transmission on that is a synchronized manual transmission. And for the problem I'm not very sure about it.

After a bit of thought... pressure test the system. Check the radiator cap and the thermostat. You might have a worn out cap and/or a sticking thermostat. Also look for any signs of coolant in the engine oil or vice versa - oil in the radiator/antifreeze mixture.

You see anything like those conditions - you've got more serious issues like cylinder pitting, head gasket leaking or a cracked cylinder head.

You might also consider draining the system and using a radiator cleaner to flush the radiator and refill with new coolant. Especially if this hasn't been done in a number of year's.

Along this same line of action - you could also remove the radiator's and have a local shop (dealer might be able to do it) boil the radiator's in a cleaning tank. Not as routine a procedure as was the case a number of year's ago - but when radiator cores are damaged or begin to seperate from the housing - they are typically "boiled" before re-soldering.

IMO - if you take things all the way to this last level - replace the water pump and thermostat, too.

Beginning with blowing the radiator's out with compressed air and running in a lower gear, etc. the previous steps are what I would do if I were trying to resolve a "hot tractor" problem.

Good luck.

How many hours are on this tractor?

If it over heats and you did not lose engine coolant I would not shut it off. Just stop throttle down and let it idle to cool it.

How is the engine temp when this happens?

I would think most likely a plugged filter, screen, or fault sensor as others have said. Some Deere tractors have an internal screen that can plug up, you will need to find out if this has one and how to access it.

Im thinking its just an instrument faliure since its not hot to touch. The light should not come on below 225 degrees.

I called jd dealer and he said he would bet on a bad sensor since the light was flashing and not on solid. I bought a new sensor and plan to put it on Friday a long with changing hydrolic fluid and both filters

It has 4500 hrs and the engine temp is normal

I agree with the JD dealer. Bad sensor or loose wire.

changed fluid filters and sensor and light still came on after a while of pulling sub soiler

Sounds like your machine wants to act like mine do. I know that sensor wasnt cheap.

It was about 40 dollars. The transmission. Is warm to the touch but it is not near as hot as the oilpan was

The last 2 JD sensors I had to buy were over 200 each. Glad yours was 40 but you still got problems. I dont know much about it but what I do know is the light is supposed to flash @ 225 degrees then stay lighted @ 240. Not sure but have been told it'll shut down @ 250. If you can touch your transmission, then its nowhere near 225. Something in that controller is screwing up and its probally going to take a JD mechanic with JD electronics to figure it out.
