I have a 08 JD 5103 tractor with approx 1650 hrs on it. I primarily use it for mowing my 25
acre pecan orchard. The problem I am having now is the transmission gets so hot that it nearly burns my hand to touch
any part of the transmission housing. I replaced the hyd fluid filter this morning and that did not help at all. Has anyone out there had a similar problem? Thks for your response. BTW, I am not using JD Hy Gard fluid but generic from from Tractor Supply.

First - are you sure the transmission is overheating now and ran at a cooler temperature before? It doesn't need to be extremely hot to be too hot for touch. I use an infrared temperature gun to periodically check my tractors. Super accuracy is not important - I have cheap ones from Harbor Freight in each of my tractors.
Second - your tractor has an open center hydraulic system. If for some reason a valve is stuck or something similar happens, all the oil will be pumped over the 2800 psi relief and it will overheat quickly.
Third - the 3 point system - if the feedback is out of adjustment, the hydraulics can still be getting a signal to raise when the arms are at the top. Check to make sure this isn't causing the hydraulic system to run continuously at relief.
Tractor Data indicates you have 2 hydraulic pumps - a 6.8 gpm steering pump and a 9.5 gpm pump for other hydraulic functions. Need to check both systems.

I forget the actual number, but I believe 120 deg f is close to where an object is too hot to maintain contact with. A transmission is definitely going to be too hot to touch when up to temp. My past 2 tractors (hst) would get up to 190-200 deg f when worked.

I would agree with using an infrared thermometer and check the hydraulic functions. I would also check the hydraulic oil cooler to make sure it is clean too on a regular basis.

You changed the filter but did you clean the screen in the differential? It's right next to the PTO shaft. You'll have to drain the hydraulic fluid. About 10 gallons.
