Thanx to everyone. You probably saved me from a bad experience as I was real close to going with what I got. I'll probably just borrow a larger trailer and tow vehicle from my father in law when I'm ready. Thanx again.

You would be much happier with 10-ply rated, Tube-Type, Non Radial Trailer Tires... no sidewall issues...
Would probably have helped significantly. Alas, my wife wanted me to have a bigger trailer, so I upgraded and gave my parents a good deal on my old one. And there's still the brake issue.
I use a Diesel Excursion that is set-up for 14k trailer... never noticed any deficiency brake wise.
Ummm, ya. I have no doubts. That thing is a freight train. Little different than a S-10.
The local Utility Company Tows Single Axle, 8k rated Cable Spool Trailers without brakes... I've often wondered how this is legal?
Good question. They don't have brakes? Is it a pintle hitch thing? Or if your tow vehicle is over a certain gross weight or something? They don't exactly tow those spools behind F150's...they're usually behind 50,000# dump trucks. Dunno.

Pintle Hitch behind Older Ford 600 series and one new, as in brand new F 450 Flat Bed... no brakes on the trailer(s) Each trailer carries one massive spool of cable guessing about 3" dia.

The city is under-grounding utilities and the Contractor asked if he could park wheeled equipment in my lot during the day and I said OK... the project has been going on for 3 weeks.

They made a mistake and set a huge concrete vault for a transformer in the wrong spot... I told the operator it was wrong and he said, "nicely" it's going where it needs to go...

I was right and it had to be dug-up and moved and they had already grouted it... the operator took the fence line for the property line...

Around here the spool trailers have pintle hitches with surge brakes. Same thing with the phone companies pole trailers.

Some states like Kentucky still do not require brakes on any trailer, no matter what the weight. When I go down to the lakes I see guys towing 45,000# house boats on old modified House Trailer Frames with no brakes. They usually use a short Semi, like the ones used to pull modular homes to dunk them in the lake.
