John Deere 990 2-wheel drive
I have a jd990 with a jdmx5 cutter. I want to buy a trailer
to transport it. I have a 2003 Ford Ranger 4-wheel drive
with the FX4 off-road package. The 990 2-wheel weighs
3000 lbs. and the mx5 weighs 800 lbs. Will the trailer
push me over my 5200 lb. limit? Anyone help?

My 16' trailer weighs 1600 pounds.
You may get away with overloading by a couple hundreds pounds if your area is fairly flat.
Make sure your trailer has brakes that work.

Thanks for the info. I failed to mention that my tractor and hog are 19-ft in
length. Also my max loaded trailer weight is 5560 lbs.
I looked at the Big Tex Trailer site but they don't give
weights.

The Ranger 4x4's were build on a ¾ ton chassis so I think the truck can handle it. Not sure about the engine or transmission though...especially the transmission. If it's a stick and you stick with direct drive (no 5th gear usage), I'd try it. If you have an automatic, I think I'd want a transmission oil cooler.

Definitely a hitch welded to the frame...the bumper type hitch wouldn't hack it.

After that, it's technique... That Ranger doesn't have the mass of a larger truck...it'll be easier for the "tail to wag the dog" if you're not careful. Even on the highways, you'll want to limit your speed to around 50 MPH. Hills and such will require the use of lower gears. And your stoppong distances will be greatly extended.

Roy, I have the 4.0 liter V-6 with 4.10 gears with the
5-speed auto with overdrive cutoff switch. I also have
the factory receiver hitch. My factory max weight is 5560.
I would want electric brakes on both axles. Thank you
for the info.

I tow my tractor with a Chevy Astro Van AWD.
Not a bad tow with equalizer load leveling hitch and 4 wheel brakes.
We have small hills but nothing that the Astro cannot handle.
My loaded trailer is closer to 4000 pounds.
Your Ranger may be under powered and overloaded with a load over 5500 pounds.

The Ford site says that a Ranger with FX4 Level 2 option is rated at 5200 pounds.
Is that the same package you have?

I think you'll be over the limit trying to haul both because of trailer length. My 7X18' 10k weighs 2,500lbs. I wouldn't think a 7k trailer would be that much less. Most 6x16' weigh 1500lbs or more. You could tow it without cutter on 16' or buy another truck. I lean toward the new truck.

I have the FX4 Level 1. I have a Ford Trailering brochure
that says my max weight is 5560.
