Traffic Circles/Roundabouts?

There is a new intersection that enters Valley View Mall in Roanoke.
The bridge forces two lanes of traffic to travel in the wrong direction (as compared to normal).
It has not opened yet, but, they have been warning locals about it for over a year,,,
I think they are expecting people to have trouble purposely driving in the wrong lane,,,, :confused2:

Oh well... "When your in it you own it"... as I heard stated!

My first one was on I-40 in New Mexico during road construction at an on/off ramp for a truck stop. I had to go around 3 times to read all the sighs.

Now that everyone has expounded on the traffic circles, try on the "crossover intersection". (Do a search) They work where there is not enough room for a true cloverleaf but o'wow', the first time through is a treat. There is one in Lexington, KY, RT 4 and Harroldsburg Road. Having been through it a couple of dozen times or so, I still get a kick out of it.

That is the diverging diamond I have referenced several times. There are many of them here.

You get used to it pretty quick, It actually works pretty well. The first one I saw was several years ago in Springfield, Mo. But we have them here in Branson now, and Springfield is full of them.

We have 6 roundabouts now and 3 more soon to be finished. They bug people that are not use to them and I don't mind them now. We will be getting the states first 2 Diverging Diamond intersections in a few years and I can't wait. It sure seems like they work good flowing a ton of vehicles including semis smoothly.

Experienced something similar to this a few years ago in Killeen, TX. The left turn lanes from the frontage roads go under the highway on the "wrong side." My wife flipped the first time I took one of those turns.

Roundabouts have been appearing in my area recently at a high rate . I 've had experience using them in other areas so no problem for me . Funny, public service announcements have been running on TV instructing people how to use them .

Expect some accidents early on. Like kOua said, they work pretty well. While not an answer to the same situation, I would rather go through a crossover than navigate some of the busier traffic circles.

It looks pretty good on a warm sunny day.
i bet it looks a lot different with 6" of snow on the ground and after dark. And don't forget about the drunks. They will never figure it out.

Haven't seen those up here, yet. I get the left-turn safety benefit, but it seems counter-intuitive that adding traffic lights (compared to full clover-leafs) will improve flow.

We already have the traffic lights for the on/off ramps to empty out. Full clovers work if you use enough acreage (not here) to allow semis to get up to speed.

A while back they put a DDI in St. Peters Missouri where Mid Rivers Mall passes over I-70. It has helped quite a bit. there were always traffic jams there in the past. A shopping mall, COSTCO, Menard's as well as other strip malls creates a lot of traffic in the area. Unlike the one in the animation, the traffic crossing over I-70 swaps back and forth. If the timing is good you can exit the mall, cross over to the left and turn onto I-70 west with no stops.

Understood. If ramp volume is too high, then backups end up extending out into the main highway (standard layout interchange).

Perhaps I misunderstood the animation..... I was thinking of the lights added to the straight through highway, which are not present normally with clover leafs.

There will only be the need to stop hwy traffic the 2 times they cross. We will no longer need to stop traffic to let people enter or exit ramps. So, we already have the 2 lights and they should be timed quicker with the DDI.
