Tractor wont start on incline

...

The function of the "STOP SOLENOID" got reversed around 2003 with intro of L..30 models (and other products).

...
Probably for safety, less chance of a run away if the default position cuts off the fuel.

I really appreciate all the feedback and comments so far. I haven't messed with fuel systems ever, and your input is greatly appreciated.

I haven't had too much time to mess with the tractor (or spend any time on research) after spending a bit with it in the morning today...

Regarding comments since this morning:
Where would this solenoid be located (logically).. e.g. would it be somewhere before fuel filter or after? If it's after, it would make sense to be, potentially, an issue.
Where would be a good location to review the overall schematic of fuel flow and relevant parts for L series or mine specifically?

I did hear some unusual clicking at some point, which almost sounded like the type you hear in a gas car when battery is low and starter don't get enough juice. However, I don't recall the circumstances and don't believe I've heard it again.

Stop soli has two control circuits normally, start and hold. Either can have a bad fuse or relay, this sounds more like maybe weak soli or dirty linkage. Couldn't figure out you exact machine from the pic, and didn't see it in the threads I read. The below as produced when I googled john deere 4020 stop soli. Try it with you tractor and should get something similar. Generally not too bad to get to, and not too hard to test.

Best,

Stop solenoid on the L3430 is in front of the injection pump.

Bled air, shot of Starter fluid. good to go.

If you use starter fluid in a Kubota diesel you are risking extensive engine damage from everything I have read (and have come to believe).

I would advise NOT doing this, but it IS your tractor and wallet! ;)

What are your thoughts on this being a safety switch issue? My neighbor brought it up, and I initially brushed it off (to me the only safety is to "stop moving" the tractor, I don't recall one shutting it off altogether), but in my original "lose power" incident, as well as what triggered this incident, the tractor "fell on it's ass" (dirt brushed against some portion of the body in the rear). I am not next to machine right now, but I'll be actively researching this evening where the wiring is to check.

I am also reading up on how to test the solenoid.

Potentially relevant thread:

Another potentially relevant thread

Another potentially relevant thread (but tractor didn't sputter)... OTC switch/sensor

Threads mention manual, found "Check the Engine Start System" in it, will run through it to check all sensors.. Although if issue is intermittent, may not show anything.. Will look for actual sensors too.

Further reading indicated that any sensor issues should result in a more sudden shutdown of the tractor than what I am experiencing (sputtering, like lack of fuel or oxygen).. speaking of which, will try running w/o air filter, that hasn't been changed in a while.

So I had some time late in late eve (you know, "life" gets in the way of "fun")
Unless I am missing something, and will still go through the "check the engine start system" checklist, my understanding if it was a sensor issue, I would see more intermittent issues, and more so with starting. I do not see any issues with moving, tractor just idles for a while and dies.
It's either starved of fuel, or maybe gets too much air?
Starved of fuel to me is either going back to the lift pump again, or maybe the solenoid doesn't fully open (is that even possible?)
What I can't explain, why does the issue become worse the warmer the tractor gets.
And I mean literally, the last time I couldn't get it past 1000 RPM when it was mid to upper 80's, today I couldn't get it past 2000 RPM when it was low 70's in the evening.. I also seem to have more success in running the tracor for longer in the morning (and now evenings) than in the afternoons.

Frankly, the theory that would make most sense to me is a cracked fuel line. The warmer it is probably the softer the rubber and the easier for it to suck air in... Still don't fully explain what happens when it runs for a while, maybe fuel warms up from the engine? The behavior seems rather similar to when I open up the "bleed" vent while engine is running. Wouldn't one expect some sort of minor fuel leak as proof of fuel line issues?

Video of today's rev-up ,please notice, running the test w/o air filter.

similar issues (tractor warms up and fails to perform), no solution posted

Found this.. it's not impossible for me to have made a mistake of filling diesel can with gas, although I haven't made that mistake in 7 yrs I owned a tractor, so probability is not high.
If the problem gets worse as the engine warms up, I would consider the diesel fuel is contaminated with gasoline. Before you spend a lot of money on parts, I would drain the tank and replace the fuel with clean fresh diesel from a reliable source. Drain some of the fuel into a flat pan and you should be able to smell the gasoline vapors evaporating from the diesel.

There is a lot of reference to "junk in the tank", but I thought I ruled it out with fuel cup around filter being always full.

Is there another filter (e.g. on the pump) other than the main one?

Replaced battery this morning, as it was contributing to poor starting issues (and power-washed the gunk out)
Tractor continues to start rough. Exhaust seems clean, indicating all cylinders firing OK?
Took radiator cap off to look for head gasket issues.. ran tractor for probably 20-30 mins, saw coolant moving, but no bubbles.
Checked all sensors per manual book, they work.
Still can't rev up. Going to look at it again with somebody that knows what they're doing a lot more than I do.

The trail is going a little cold here. Several people have made suggestions - but many are without + or - feedback on what was found - more than "it still isn't working right" We need more about if and how each idea was looked at what was found so we know what's been ruled out.
