Snow Tractor time in the snow!

Junkman was out in the snow over the weekend testing out his newly acquired snow blower.
The attached picture caught Junkman in action causing near white out conditions.

I think a rear blade is about 3x faster than using the FEL to clear snow,
In my experience the FEL is faster. No need to turn around to see what you're doing. The FEL simply acts like a fixed front blade once the bucket is full.

but a blower is 10x faster!
As you pointed out, it depends on the depth of the snow, how far you have to push it. With the snows we get around here (most less than 12"), I can push snow to the end of a 100' driveway, no problem. Plus the driveways I clear are built so I can push to the end of the driveway, then off the driveway and dump the bucket, back up, and take another pass with very little spillage.

Our area got about 7 inches of snow over the weekend. I cleared 3 driveways and the paddock at our barn in 1.5 hours of tractor time. Total area 5,000 - 6,000 sq ft.

Nice thing about a blower is you can blow AFTER the snow stops, even drifts in the 24" to 36" range vanish. Can't really do that with a rear blade, it seems best to get out with one of those when there is 5" to 8" on the ground so under a heavy snow, you have to go out a couple times.
This is why I don't use a rear blade. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif The only mid-storm clearing I do is to shovel in front of the garage so I can open the doors open (they open out, not up), in order to get the tractor out.

As with most things tractoring related, what works best for one doesn't for others. I couldn't use a 3ph snow blower because of the proximity to houses, cars, etc. Just no safe place to blow the snow from a tractor mounted unit. A walk behind sould be fine...but no fun. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Man, you are blowing that stuff so high, how do you keep it off of you? How do you stay warm? Do you have neighbors doing the same thing?

MikePA, I do tend to make generalizations, so I'll agree with you on the specifics being what dictates what works best. In my area the only damage I can do with a blower is shooting a little gravel into the yard when I do my neighbor's drive. There is nothing else around to hit. On my drive I do have to be careful near the front door area. But for the most part I can just let the snow fly. My drive is not long but it is curved with a small slope the other one I get to regularly is more of an "s" shape and with a steeper slope, I find that trying to push snow with an FEL on curves spills too much out of the bucket. The back blade works better for me on both of those drives, but landscaping along the edges of the drives takes a real beating when snow is pushed on to it. The blower solves all those issues by throwing the snow over the landscaping into the yard and/or woods and it does it FAST!

KrisHansen . . . I couldn't get the video to load!

Sherpa . . . you can feel sorry for us, but I look forward to any snowfall I can get and I really love it when we get anything over 8". But I might just be one of the crazy few.

You are da man!!! It took me an hour to download that movie on my slow dial up internet service but it was worth it. It looks like it would take more than a drive shaft to throw that snow that far. My wife ask me if all you guys carry cameras in your tool boxes?
Thanks Chris!

Sherpa,

glad you were able to watch it! I don't carry a camera in my tool box.. I had it set up on the tripod just to film myself play...er, working in the snow. :-D

Thanks for sharing the video. Videos are appreciated. For a second there, it looked like you were going to send the camera flying, too. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I was going for that effect.. I could see the camera the whole time.. The beauty of a rear mount blower I guess..

It was a real "Spielberg" moment - much like something from JAWS....

We watched the movie again tonight, it was already downloaded. How did you turn the camera off and on, you were on the tractor?

I just had it on my tripod, running the whole time. I only digitized that small clip from my video cam.
