Looking good. It is always a pain to properly prepare for painting, but it's the most important steps.
What type of primer did you use?

That's awesome. Can't wait to see it in action.

I was out using my homemade excavator yesterday and it's a lot of fun. I'm always looking for things to dig with it.

I cleaned sand build up out of a ditch with it yesterday and dug out some vines.

I'm like a kid in a sandbox with it and I'm sure you will be too.

I've had so much fun that I now want to upgrade to one of these. :laughing:



Only problem is I need to find the money for it.

I'm using a 2 component primer. It takes more time to dry, but it has a nice texture, and a good long lasting shiny finish

Connecting the booms in order to align the cylinders. Main frame is already painted and hopefully it will be dry tomorrow...

I can't imagine how much that's going to weigh...my Woodmaxx BH is not nearly that stout and weighs 1,100 lbs (500kg).

Booms are made out of thin steel (6 and 8 mm) and are not as heavy as they seem. Estimated weight of the whole machine is 1000 kg.

I actually wonder if anyone has ever designed and built a backhoe from scratch this nice (on their own), ever? I'm sure there have been some piece milled, and such, but this thing is about as close to heavy duty commercial or more than most.

I don't really know...there are a few on Youtube...but they are mostly made out of rectangular tubes. None has the "banana boom".

Been following your project pretty much from the beginning - a very impressive body of work. From the design thru to the execution you've shown a very deliberate thought process on a very complex piece of machinery. Thanks for your contribution to TBN!

Well, don't be so modest. It is exceptional project.
I have one of those square tube BH that I bought for the sum of the parts to dig a ditch to my pond. It works OK and dug 280 m/900 ft of long ditch and numerous holes for tree planting but it keeps breaking pins in the boom. I wanted to rework it next year when I retire but your project might motivate me to build new one.
