Tractor backhoe - homemade

You can bring a LOT in sight with a clear plan and parts cut out for you... I am too cheap and mostly use scrap materials that need to be beat to fit :p

However it seems the plates arent exactly rolled ( i know how hard it is, even with CNC rolls) so that was the part in which i was interested the most: how are you going to pull the edges together so the rolled top and bottom plate follow the contour of the side plates exactly. It will be learning on the go, and i cant wait to watch along :) ;)

Actually, they are rolled almost perfectly (we spent 2 hours on all this rolling), but here they are just put to the ground to get a view of the whole thing. First, I will drill holes through both sides, then weld both side plates together with these round tubes and precise pins. After that comes the top and bottom plate together. It should be easy...hopefully

First "hook up" test. The main frame fits great although I expected problems, there were none.

Looks like it fits great. Been fun to watch your progress so far. Can't wait to see it finished.

Me too...but it's gonna take a while, it's a big project and it takes alot of work to finish it

You just need to get your wife/girlfriend/significant other out there welding again! :)

I really enjoy watching this thing grow. One of the best threads about making something I've ever seen.

Hahaha, yes, I could ask her...but she would probably agree to do the painting, noting else...
I hope to finish the machine in a few weeks. First i'll take a little summer vacation, then I'll continue with full steam till it's done

Well, I hope not to have that problem, but there are a few good ideas that solve this "sticky clay issue" :)

Main boom assembly started yesterday... Renze, these few pictures might answer your previous question about how do I intend to align and assemble the boom plates perfectly...so, here it is :)

Wow....that's all I can say. Lot more thought then I would have ever done....and pretty too! As someone said, I'd end up seeing what "scrap/salvage" steel is available then work backwards....

Sorry, but I didn't go through the 20 pages of posts.....but how much will this attachment weight when all said and done??? Just wondering....

Hopefully around 1000kg or 2200 lbs. I'm trying to keep it as light as possible. This boom looks heavy but it's actually not. One man alone can deal with it, turn it upwards etc.

Who says tractor owners cannot be artists? That backhoe will be too beautiful to use/abuse. This is truly more like a piece of art than a piece of machinery. However, I have no doubt it will be as functional as it is beautiful. Nicely done.

Did you drill the two side plates for the alignment dowels at the same time to ensure they remain parallel? I may have missed that step. I also assumed that you squared up the dowels to the surface of the first side plate before you tacked them in?

Great build and thanks for sharing.

Yes, I tacked the side plates togetherwith 3 of the reinforcement plates and then drilled through everything. I aligned the dowels to 90 degrees in all directions and then tacked them on opposite sides to avoid tilting caused by welding heat.

Almost done...

Very nice work, you've actually inspired me to attempt building a loader and backhoe for a 300 series Deere Lawn Tractor. If everything goes as planned I want to start my build sometime in late November or December this year.

Looking good Bfreaky. Your wife/girlfriend/significant other is a fine welder. :)

:) Yes, hahahhahahah!

Well, after doing most of the welding I wanted to clean up a bit and try out the boom, just to get a feeling of the size of the whole thing. So here's how it looks.
Tomorrow I'll start assembling the dipperstick...
