Towing 10.1K with either Toyota Tundra SR5 OR F150 which is better?

Well, it looks like this thread is going to bust the 100 post line.
From my reading of the thread my preferred vehicle would be the Tundra SR5 V8, but they are as rare as hen's teeth.
I've actually run across several F150's that (based on VIN) have the tow capacity, the length and other features. The only main problem is the crazy prices.

I understand all the comments about "it's to small to tow that much", but really, I'm only planning on towing a load of about 7K at the MOST with that truck. Mostly moving household items from Virginia to Mississippi. For heavier loads I'll have the F350 dually.

You won't go wrong at 7000 lbs with an F 150 with either Ecoboost engine.

All trucks built today have a payload sticker. I posted a pic of mine. This is on the drivers door area normally. Don’t go by advertising or some salesman, look at the actual truck.

Max tow on the F150? The truth is it doesn’t really add much tow capacity. It has a slightly stronger hitch but what it really does is combine the items you want for towing into a package at a discount.

If you buy the right half ton I’d tow 10,000 pounds assuming you have the right hitch setup as long as it wasn’t a travel trailer. They just catch too much wind.

The prices of F150’s? Yes stupid compared to a few years ago. We bought ours in late 2017 when discounts were available. The same truck today might go for $20k more.

How so? If you buy a properly configured Ram 1500 (meaning my A8HP70 trans, 3.92 rear, 5.7L Hemi, 4x4), it's rated 10,150 lb. If you drop the 4x4, it goes to 10.3 - 10.4k, depending on bed configuration. What's the F150 rated?

As others have said the F-150 can be optioned to 13,000.

What I was finding was same as the poster I replied to found: the trucks on the lot were optioned for comfort not capacity. Some had only 4500 pound tow rating. A RAM 1500.

I reiterate determining actual tow rating is very difficult to determine. Would be trivial for the manufacturer to post on door panel but as others have pointed out it is something one must go to effort to calculate. Is not printed in the hitch receiver.

There is a tag on the bottom of the hitch that lists the capacity of the hitch, both with and without a weight distribution hitch. You are correct that’s NOT the capacity of the truck. There are on line guides that list the tow rating by cab configuration, 4x4 or not, engine and rear gear ratio. There is just a lot of possibilities there but if you sort through it you can find it for a specific truck.

...I tow my 16' open car hauler with tandem 3500 axles with a 4,000lb car with no trailer brakes fine. It drops my gas mileage down to about 7-8mpg...

I would not admit to knowingly towing without trailer brakes on a public forum. And especially not with a 1/2-ton.

As an aside, 7-8 mpg is about what my Ram 3500 gets when pulling 25,000 lbs. And that's in the Rockies. But even if it got only 3 mpg, the extra safety margin of the longer and heavier tow vehicle is well worth it, I think.

After reviewing how to calculate payload capacity and towing capacity it's obvious that truck mfg's give unrealistic numbers and that it's up to the consumer to figure out the real numbers.

It is marketing. Obfuscate. Pretend a corner condition applies to all, then C.Y.A. with fine print directing one to manuals to calculate actual load and tow ratings.

With all the right bells and whistles, and just the right configuration, and a reasonable amount of knowledge and experience, some modern 1/2 tons CAN tow up to 11K, but those trucks can't stop worth a crap.

Trailer is supposed to have brakes of it’s own sufficient to stop it’s mass.
