Tough Day For Me

Sorry to hear about you losing Gunner. I have been through it many times and can still get a tear in my eye when thoughts drift to friends long lost. I hope you one day find another special friend to fill the void.

I have added a photo of two of my best friends that we had to put down not so long ago. "Dually", the black dog on the right was a French Beauceron and "Oscar" the tan one a Belgium Malinois. We lost Dually back in February of 2010 and then Oscar in May of this year.

Both were rescues so we could not be sure but thought both to be around twelve.

Brings tears to my eyes. Our Bubba is my avatar. He's a 8 year old boxer. The only bad thing about these little guys is that they don't live as long as us. They really get into your heart.
I have had six boxers in the past and helped to place several more. Having said goodbye to the last one in 1996, I stayed away from the breed until this past May.

About the same time we were losing "Oscar" (my previous post), my wife happened across this boxer and decided it was time I had another. We also got a boxer mix about three weeks ago. Both are rescues. The brindle was thin like the mix but as you can see, he has filled out and we now have to watch his weight.

People will ask me about boxers and along with their many attributes, I always warn them that they will also break your heart...

IMHO, owners of pure breds will experience loss on a more regular basis than those who own, shall we say, hybrids.

I'm a German Shepherd guy, through and through, and have been for 27 years.

I know your loss, and sympathise. You have my best wishes.

As has been said by others, the best cure is a new buddy.

Pic is of zak, sadly passed aged 14.

The only true example of unconditional love in this life is the love of a dog for it's master. In my opinion there is a reason Dog is God spelled backwards......

God speed, Gunner! Say hello to Bart and Jess and Janie for Jessie and me!

People... I feel the sincerity in your posts. Thank you so much.

Gunner passed without incident yesterday afternoon. We took him in the back of the Pathfinder which he hadn't rode in for a few weeks. I put all the windows down and focused the mirror on him and his nose was straight up as we went by all the farms...just a sniffin'. He was happy.

Dog...Man's best friend.

Thank you all.

If it should be that I grow frail and weak,
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must done,
For this last battle can't be won.

You will be sad - I understand,
Don't let your grief then stay your hand,
For this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship will stand the test.

We've had so many happy years,
What is to come can have no fears,
You'd not want me to suffer so,
When the time comes, please let me go.

Take me where my needs they'll tend,
Only stay with me until the end,
And hold me firm and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see.

Finally in time you too will see,
It is kindness you do to me,
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.

Don't grieve that it should be you
Who has to decide this thing to do,
We've been so close, we two those years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

Rest well Gunner.

JDGreenGrass, you have my heartfelt condolences as well. Every time someone posts that their best friend has passed on, I tear up, and this time was no different.

Sorry for your loss ! This is Jake and Jazz (Jake is the older and Jazz the younger)
We got Jazz because I fell in love with Jake who belonged to a friend of ours and he LOVED to go fishing with me. Our friend lost Jake last year and Jazz is now 7.
They are a part of your life and the love is unconditional.
Wouldn't it be great if people were more like dogs ? :D

Sorry for the loss of your friend!

I know how hard it is to lose a good friend. We had to have one of our three dogs put down in February 2010. He was 13-years-old that month. I told the vet that I would take him home to bury in the backyard. She objected on the bases of frozen ground and all. I must have given her some look as she said no more. Needless to say I put "Freeway" aka "Mr. Big" to his resting place that night. I felt that it was a good way for me to say good bye. He was my first dog and you can only have one of that.
