Ship owners like a single engine/single propeller design and the new generation of larger container ships needed a bigger engine to propel them. <font color="blue"> </font>

I got to see 2 of these up close and personal several years ago. The company I work for manufactures control systems for power plants. While most power is generated from steam turbines, a small city utility in Sebing FL. decided to use diesel engines. Each one was 8 cyl with a bore of about 3' and a stroke of about 5' and had (if I remember correctly) a 25 megawatt generator connected directly to the tail shaft. They generated so much exhaust that the exhaust heat was used to create steam to turn a steam turbine generator for more electricity. I got to climb around on the engines and look them over. Impressive. Each engine was about 3 stories tall.
