Since the wood winch was mostly successful I decided to build a steel one. Here's the start. image-3762241157.jpg image-6316680.jpg

I built a prototype drill powered winch and improved my truck cup holder. The winch worked surprisingly well. It'll lift 200 pounds and pull 10 feet of rope in 4 seconds. I plan on adding a brake, gear reduction, and the ability to drive it with 2 drills at the same time or a hand crank. I consider the cup holder much improved. The PVC made very annoying strings. They stuck to everything and wrapped around the chuck. I had to stop often and clean it off. View attachment 489764

Your winch has my interest. What did you use for an arbor?

The drum is hardwood. Ash to be more exact. The arbor that the drill drives is rebar. The other winch has a 15/16 steel shaft.

I worked on the gear reduction on the winch today and I changed the radiator in my truck. image-2293235016.jpg image-56953371.jpg

I'm not sure why you are reinventing the wheel ??, with boat winches so cheep to buy...

Of course a HD American made one is going to be a lot more money, but I made an adapter to run my two speed winch with a cordless drill,

It works VERY good and cost very little to make...

Satisfaction of building one = priceless.

First issue, is that the wheels hang up easy driving over small chips, etc. on the shop floor... I think I got to go much bigger and maybe pneumatic.

I would pass on the pneumatic wheels, do you really want to be under there adding air? The carts we have around work with air filled tubed tires need to be inflated regularly. Cheaply made maybe but they seem to loose air after a few months with no weight on the cart. Also, it might be more tippy after because of the way those big wheels swivel. Can you push yours out to the edges instead? And of course sweep the floor more. :)

What a great idea. I have two of these I bought on sale to install on a utility trailer and used retractable straps instead permanently attached.
So I've been wondering what to use them on. Bingo, a little lift. Have a woodshop and some ability in wood. Have a welder, chop saw, supply of steel
in various sizes, and zero ability. Did you make that metal mount or is cannibalized off something else?
All these great things one can build with a welder.

building an overhead half ton lift for picking up garden tractors instead of using my tractor's FEL is an interesting idea.

The winch and mount are for turning logs on my BSM,

they many times are also used for parbuckleing logs onto the mills deck.

I just use mine for turning big logs and wanted to use a drill to power it, so I made the adapter.
