I know this subject a probably been beat to death, but as a new owner please bear with me. I saw a post recently about someone selling turf tire wheels. Maybe I missed something here but, am I to understand that you need special wheels to run turf tires?? Firestone has 9.5 x 22 turfs for the back of my 1500d and I'm going to check on price and availability tonite. But this wheel thing has me confused. Again, maybe I'm crazy. Thanks

Yep, Mike, unfortunately. The wheels are made a bit different, and are different widths, for turf tires, ag tires, or industrial tires. So if you want to change type of tires, you have to also change wheels.

Mike,
The Firestone 9.5 x 22 "turf" tires are actually more correctly called ANS (all no skid) or diamond tread tires designed as a replacement for the equivalent size R1 (ag tire). Real turf tires in the same diameter ( or circumference) would be much wider (and more expensive) and therefore require wider rims.

Well I must say that sucks. Do you guys know what the difference is between the wheels? Or is it in the tires? Are they wider at the bead area? Thats the only way I could see them not working on rice wheels. Thanks

The diamond treads will fit your rims. The turf tires will not. I have used the diamond treads for 3 years and they are fine. Far better than tearing up the yard with rice tires. In snow you might want chains on really heavy wet snow.

Ok, now we're getting someplace. And thanks blackd for the reponse. Firestone calls these Turf & Field(R3) and says they will fit "standard, one piece rims". Blackd, what brand are the diamond treads you are using?

I have the Bridgestones. Do you have 4 wheel drive? If so you MUST match the original tire ratios. Search the forum for 4WD & matching tire sizes.

Blackd, do happen to remember what you paid for those tires, I'm just curious. As far as the 4wd part of it, I have been looking through the old posts and found way too much info. Its just like the engineers I work with,, always trying to reinvent the wheel. If you take the circumfrence of the stock tires front and rear, (with or without a static load, your choice) and get a new set with the same ratio your all set. I plan on getting the diamonds for the rear and then finding something for the front. Car tire, light truck tire, whatever. This aint rocket science, just simple math. Thanks for your help

Somewhere back in the dusty archives RogerScotty posted a picture of the wide turfs on his 366D. I seem to remember him writing about trying to cross a stream and the tractor floating down stream. On the 186D the wheels for the wide turfs are 2 inches wider and an inch shorter.

On a 2Wd it wouldn't make any difference you could use any wheels and tires you could make fit. But on the 4WD you need to keep the relationship of the rolling circumference of the front and back tires the same so as not to stress the drive system.

Detroit, I think total price was @ $300 installed, but I can not remember if that was for both or each. I also used truck tires on the front end that is why I mentioned the matching ratios. It may be simple math, but the numbers are suspect. I do have some minor drive train wind up, but not significantly more than I had with the original tires. I try never to drive it on a hard surface for extended periods. Last time I tried, forgetting that golden rule, the tractor started to bog down. Luckily I remembered I was in 4WD before I ruined any drive parts.

Don, $300 for both sounds about right. I found one guy thats got 'em for $165 per plus$35 to ship 'em. Also another guy that has blems for $120 per. I gotta say thats alot cheaper than I thought they would be. I'll pass along the names and numbers of these places soon. Thanks

Mike, do you mind sharing where you got those prices. I'm the guy that posted the need for the 9.5x22's a while ago. Still looking but feeling much more reassured that they will fit my existing rims. Thing is I'd like another set of rims so I can switch to the rice tires if necessary. Thanks, Brett W

The blems for $120 were at tiretown.com 1-800-444-7209 but he didnt have any right now. The new ones for $165 were at tuckertire.com 1-800-443-0802. But I went to my local Firestone dealer and they can get em for around $200. I'm gonna go that way to save the shipping.
