Because i needed to respond to this:

Yeah, but his full post presented better balance than the excerpt. Its easy to get a bsfilter flareup on an isolated statement.

1. Get the 4x4. (IMHO this is always a good choice)

2. Get tires with a tread for the most damage-sensitive situation you generally need. For example, if you mostly just cut your lawn, get turfs. If its mostly backhoe, loose/dry dirt moving, or running on pavement, get R4's. If the tractor is to be almost always used off-road in the woods, field, dirt, or snow, get R1's.

3. If you need more traction in mud or other sloppy conditions on an occasional basis, temporarily add some aggressive tire chains. Chains are a lot cheaper and easier to swap-on than an extra set of tires and a whole lot cheaper than a entire extra tractor.
