way back when i was so much younger, i deceided that closing off the flue to a fire place would provide so much more heat. in a not so wise engineering decision, i marveled at the amount of heat delivered as the newspaper i used to partially block the flue turned brown and then exploded into a chimney fire. jet plane in the living room. thank god for firwproof gloves and snow on the ground.

I just moved into a house that has one of these new gas fireplaces that has no vent at all. I can turn this thing on as low as it will go and it will heat just about the whole house. Truly amazing and somewhat disconcerting at the same time. Just don't seem right not to vent to the outdoors.

Reminds me of the time I substituted liquid dishpan detergent for the powdered dishwasher detergent 'cause we were out. Huge spurts of foam /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif erupting from the dishwasher in all directions. I thought it was great /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif but my parents were not amused./w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif

Jeff I agree it doesnt seem right (ventless) Please make sure you have and maintain a couple of CO2 detectors

One time I figured that I would wash the floor to help mom out a bit. I wanted to get it real clean so I added a bit of bleach to the detergent (back when nobody new what phosphates were). /w3tcompact/icons/clever.gif

When I came to, I realized that I now had an excuse to never wash the floor myself again - too dangerous. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Got one just before we fired it up for the first time. For a while it put off an odor but I think it was the paint on the inside of the box burning off. Seems okay now.

Jeff, I have heard that the ventless gas fireplaces put out alot of moisture. Have you noticed anything like that with yours?

I'm not quite sure where I would look for it. I haven't noticed any on the two windows that surround the fireplace anyway. Where else would I see it?

Reminds me of an employee I have that decided his keyboard keys needed cleaning. It was too hard to just wipe them down and try to get them clean in between. So, he just figured he pop them off the board and let them soak in some cleaning solution. Turns out the cleaning solution was harsh enough that it reacted to the plastic and melted and disfigured each one to the point they could'nt be reattached/w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif . Luckily, we had plenty of other keyboards around to swap it out with.

I did something like that when I was young. There must have been amonia in your detergent. Have you ever heard of that extremely dangerous invisable gas called "ammonia chloride" that causes so much concern when some of it leaks out at a train or tanker truck wreck. /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif
It seems many industries use the stuff, but it is deadly once it hits the air.

I did the same thing, It was great! I wish I could have let it run longer.
I think all parents have a lack in thier sense of humer sometimes.

Last summer I and my better half were out for a ffull day of M/C riding.
The m/c need gas so I pull to the pumps and she said she was getting a coffee,so after I finish fueling and pay at the pump the m/c came to life.
About 1.000 yards or so from the gas station it hit me /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif I rode of and forgot my better half still at the gas station./w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif/w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif
Up on my return she was standing and wasn't a happy camper by any means..kinda /w3tcompact/icons/mad.gif she was.
Thank goodness the m/c pipes were a tad loud during the day /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif and every time were gas up she reminds me not to leave. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif
Oh yes I still /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif but she doesn't see it..I hope. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Still get a smile or two from this one.
Returning home I notice a BMW park on the side of the road and a subject looking at the front left tire,so I ease on up and ask if everything was okay.
Her reply was I think I'm having a flat tire, butI still have air in tire and can make to Goodyear tire store.

I took a look and told her you do have a flat tire, and she reply how can that be its only have flat..than she started to explain /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif..the bottom half had no air but the top half was still full, and if she went right along than the tire would be only half flat and should make it to Goodyear for a new tire../w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gifand she thank me for help than started the BMW. /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif
