What kind of fluid goes into the geat box for a japanese tiller?

I always use Universal Tractor Fluid. It's the same thing that I use in the Tractor's Hydraulic/Transmission sump.

Any farm store should have it.

Well KK tillers take type GL5-85W 140 or Triple Zero
Grease; which can be poured, and has "EP" i.e. "Extreme Pressure"
additives.

I would go with 80W140 or 80W90 GL5 gear oil.

There you have it. As many different answers as there are posters.

Give us some more details... What make? How big?

Yanmar tillers take gear oil in the box and in the chain/gear case.
