Thumping Noise

On my L3710 I hear a distinct "thumping" sound coming from the right rear wheel. It normally happens while operating in reverse, but I've heard it going forward too. Any ideas?

Wheel bolts tight?

That was the first thing I checked. The rear wheels have wheel weights attached to them.

I have a similar sound coming from the right rear wheel of my B7500. It is more of a binding sound, it lets go followed by a slight grating sound. Does it both in forward and reverse. If your question is answered it may be the answer to mine.

I'm coming up on 50 hours and will probably take it to the dealer.

Novice, just to clarify. You checked the wheel bolts behind the wheel weights, right? Not sure what style wheel weights you have............ Mike, take your wheels off and remove the hubs (the ones that slide on the axle) and lube up the axle real good with anti-sieze, grease will work too. Re-install the hubs and tighten them up good. Then re-install the wheels.

Thanks for the reply. Are you suggesting that this is something the dealer should have done? My rears are filled and it would be quite a challenge to do it at home.

Will this cause any short/long term damage if not addressed right away?

Mike, it's really not "required" but when the hubs loosen up a bit they tend to make it sound like the rear is coming apart. If you run it that way long enough you will wear out the wedges and it will be pretty near impossible to get them tight again. I doubt in 50 hours you did any damage. If you have a floor jack it's really not too bad to deal with filled tires. Bring the axle to the wheel instead of the wheel to the axle. A helper makes things a little safer.

Just a quick thank-you for your solution to my problem.

I removed the wheels and hubs, greased the axle real good and the problem went away. As you said removing "filled rears" is no big deal.

I am sure you know this, but you are a tremendous resource to the people in this community.
