Throttle for shuttle shift

Does anyone with gear transmission(especially "shuttle shift" types) use the hand throttle instead of the foot pedal when using the FEL? Specifically I mean similar to a HST trans. whereby you set the hand throttle. I haven't tried this with my NH 1920 but would be interested in others opinions. Thanks for any thoughts or ideas.

Billfires I have one but only use it when using my backhoe
or warmming up the tractor other than that I like to have control of speed but I don't cut grass or any long drives with out stopping

I have a 1920, and set the hand throttle for idle, and use the floor throttle for anything but ( plowing, seeding, discing, mowing ).
No fel though.

The only time I use the foot throttle is during road transit, or sometimes when I am mowing and going up a hill I will use it to keep the rpm's up. Other than that I use the hand throttle for just about everything.

I use the hand throttle for most everything. I don't have an FEL /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif or I might use the foot throttle more.

Yes, I occasionally use the hand throttle with the FEL. When I am turning the manure pile, I will kick the hand throttle up a notch or two so that the FEL will move quicker when I step on the clutch. That way my focus is on the FEL controls and not on the throttle.

I will also use it if I am operating near a drop off. I have a burn pile set up in a field just below an outcropping of ledge. Because of the drought conditions, the pile is getting pretty big. I often get my front wheels right on the edge when I am am trying to add to the pile. So when I back away, it can't roll over the edge.

I have a 1720, 12x12 w/shuttle and I always use the hand throttle. With the clutch, brakes, shuttle, and loader valve its just one less thing to worry about for me. Sometimes I feel like drummer, if I just had some cymbols....

I will try to revive this thread instead of creating a new one. None of what I'm asking here involves using the PTO.

I was playing around with my tractor today and decided to use the foot throttle more since I've never bothered with it (always used the hand throttle and my dad's old Massey only has a hand throttle). I was using the FEL a lot and used the foot throttle to control ground speed, not power since I was only moving brush around. I found that in 1st or 2nd gear, using the foot throttle gives me more delicate control when I need it, but also lets me speed up a little bit when I want it. Also, I like to reverse around idle speed (without a load) since otherwise it's WAY TOO FAST. I can also go into 4th (in low range) and rev up for decent speed but let it down to idle and I'll creep along happily.

Is this hard on the motor?

Later on I went into the woods and since I was going up/down slopes more I set the hand throttle around 1200 rpm and used the foot throttle some when I wanted to speed up again. In only a few instances did I use the foot throttle for the purpose of powering the FEL, and at those times I was either stopped or already pushing against something like a big rock.

I just wanted to check mainly that I'm not going to prematurely wear out my engine by using the foot throttle to rev up and down like this. At no time did I rev it past 1800 or so, and I use the pedal gently. I never lugged the motor (even in 4th at idle) but I'm just slightly paranoid that by not setting the motor at a particular rpm and leaving it, I'm shortening the life of my engine.

Tried searching and several threads came back but none addressed my specific question.

My 2cents are no. Unless you're over reving (above 2400) you're not going to hurt anything. That's what the foot throttle is for. For FEL work or moving things around I use my foot throttle pretty much exclusively. For field work I don't want the foot fatigue and use the hand throttle. Most tractors run about 2400 for a 540 rpm PTO speed.

i would like to take this thread a step further and ask if you use the hand throttle on a shuttle shift and set the rpm's up, when you clutch to go from forward to reverse, are you wearing more on the clutch then if you used the foot throttle and let it return to idle each time?

Practice using the foot throttle and it will be your best friend with the fel and your shuttle.Dont worry about the tractor,it will love you for using it.:thumbsup:

It won't hurt it.
Thats why the foot throttle is there. I always use the foot throttle for loader work, mowing in tight areas or around trees and when forward/reversing.

I would have to say yes.
If the engine is spinning at higher RPM's it will put more stress/wear on the clutch and driveline than it will forward/reversing at low RPM.

That's another thing, I have a crash box tranny and I figured I was saving my clutch a bit by revving down between forward and reverse.

When doing loader work with our M8540, I use the foot throttle and regularly rev the engine up and down. I have done the same on other gear tractors and so far it doesn't seem to have caused problems. I don't usually let it drop down to an idle which is 800 and set it at about 1100-1200, but don't have any real reason for doing it that way; just always have.

3R, you can probably deduce from my recent thread my motivation for doing this today: "I wonder if I can make my tractor HST-like and not make myself want a new one!"

LOL. Imagine my disappointment to realize I'm not a genius and am in fact just using it how it was meant to be used.

We had a FarmTrac 360DTC FEL/BH with the shuttle shift. Never had a problem with the engine - however, with frequent loader work and heavy moving, we had problems with the clutch ... we now have an HST.

My next tractor will probably be HST, but I hope that day is a long way off. This one is bought and paid for, which is probably its best "feature!" Most of its use by far will be mowing. Loadering will mainly be moving the odd heavy item or just goofing around like I did today.
