Three way Ridgid Pipe threader?

Have the threader is good, I bought one too "in case" when I was running my lines, but its still in the box. Since the box stores sell different lenghts of the 3/4 you can always tinker toy it and get really close to the size you need.
Plus if its all hung they can come in test it and hook it up, and that way its "ok-ed" by them.

Pipe threads taper and it is important to not overcut the threads. Check each thread you cut with a good fitting, Between three and four turn by hand is what you should be able to do. When in doubt, throw it out. When assembling properly cut threads its three turns by hand, three turns by wrench, and three turn showing. The threads need to make up tight without being buried into the fitting. You can use a smaller pipe wrench or just a good pair of channel locks for assembling 3/4 pipe. An 18" or 24" pipe wrench is overkill. A 24 hour standing pressure test should be performed and show no loss of pressure. It is possible with well assembled pipe. If you lose any pressure check all joints throuroughly for leaks.

Hand threading is best for someone inexperienced with threading. If you check every thread after you cut it you should quickly learn where to stop cutting with the dies. Don't rethread over already cut threads either. If you get it wrong, cut new threads. Cut and thread you longer pieces first so any oops pieces can be reused to make shorter pieces.

The soft Type K copper tubing is well proven for underground propane piping. That would be my choice for running between the tank and house.

Artisan,

Besides the fact that I asked you not to post anymore in my thread, I looked at all you links.

NOT ONE SAYS ANYTHING ABOUT THE HOMEOWNER BEING AT FAULT FOR INSTALLING HIS OWN SYSTEM.

As a matter of fact, one of them called his gas company the day before complaining about gas smell. And do you know what those "professionals" told them? "The tank is probably low and that is why you smell it...open some windows and you'l be fine".....booom

Again, I ask, just don't post in my thread....you have nothing constructive to add.

I think whether Artisan posts or doesn't post in this thread is one of his choosing, or a matter for moderators and administrators. By starting a thread, you are not automatically bequeathed administration powers over that thread, nor are you empowered with any special rights. When one asks a question on an open forum, they should expect to receive a variety of answers. Given the dangers of gas piping, I believe Artisan is being vociferous in his enumeration of the hazards for your own safety. If you disagree, tough ****. You should save all your pennies, and start your own board.

Take a good look at your dies and make sure that they are pipe thread dies and not conduit dies. Pipe dies [ NPT ] are tapered [ as above post states ] and conduit dies make a 'flatter' thread for the locknuts and oil seals. Up thru 1", hand dies work good 'nuff, and are pretty fast. Can't make very short nipples with them, but you can buy those.

Rock, the reason I asked this is due to his PM to me that was a insulting rant. I'm here learning and asking questions. I expect to get all ranges of suggestions and answers. What I don't expect, nor appreciate is name calling childish rants that provide no useful information to the issue at hand. I am confident in my capability to learn how to screw pipe together, but if anyone disagrees I am ok with them telling me that. But, I'm an adult, and I don't take kindly to being talked to like a 6 year old.

Here on TBN many of us are tackling things that we never before would attempt because we share information. If you want to get my attention, spell out exactly why I should not screw gas pipe together, then pressure test it and check for leaks. Information on the proper pipe dope, how to properly cut threads, how to bond/ground the system is the kind of stuff that help out a poster. Shutting them down by saying hire a professional is good advise, but in my 54 years I have seen many so called professionals that I would not hire to clean my windshield. That is why I am building my own house, and yes I have hired a few things out because they are out of my comfort zone. I fail to understand that I am not capable of learning how to properly put this pipe together, but if you can show me why...I will listen, but it has to be facts, not rants, not names and not condescending threats of doom.

Thanks, Jerry(and all the others that are sharing good info)

Yes these are NPT dies. To b honest I think Forgeblast is right, I may not even need to thread since I will map out the runs ahead of time and try and buy proper length threaded pipe. I like to be prepared and having the threader is most likely more for piece of mind....er...ah...any excuse to buy a tool:laughing:

you may want to get a schrader valve and a reducer plug, that will accept the valve, and a tee with a gage on it as well, , and a cap and pressure test, ever so often, especially if you have a number of elbows, so you do not have to back out a bunch pipe if a leak occurs and needs an extra turn or so, pressure it up and some soapy water and a brush, if it leaks you will see a mess of little bubbles, (big leak bubbles may not form as they will be burst before forming, but the gage will be drooping, air and let it set for 30 Min's and see if the PSI holds, and also soap teat,

check the entire fitting as I have seen some fittings that are porous,

apparently they make a premade unit, Gas Line Test Gauge - Google Search

Thanks for the link, I have ordered a 3/4" 15 psi gauge for $12

I agree in part with Motor, personally I was somewhat offended by Art's first response, I thought it was pretty much over the top. He ripped Motor a new arse hole on that first post. The subsequent one was not much better.

I am not perfect by any means, and I have been known to have a bad post now n then, so I did not post a response.
But if Art sent a PM attacking Motor, that is a no no in my opinion.

Running black pipe for gas service is not rocket science.
Some good piping practice and common sense will go a long way.
I would venture saying almost anyone with good metal working skills and some specific knowledge points can do gas piping.
Personally I thought Motor was asking some pretty good questions, and then made specific points on how he was going to proceed so that when TBN'ers saw where he was going wrong, they could steer him back into the proper direction.

Just my :2cents: worth

years ago,
we had a neighbor house blow up by a propane leak, they did get out with out being hurt, but ever thing thing was lost, the gas company came and filled the tank and a few days later the tank was empty so they called the gas company and all they did was refill it no leak testing,

then about three weeks later I smelled some odd odor in the bath room, (yes laugh), but there was a discussion on if it was sewer gas or what what, I dug down and opened up the crawl space, (no opening to it) any why it was full of propane, at that time it had a copper line ran by what was the supplier at the time, or a "professional" but it did not exit the soil before entering the building, and one of the flair fittings has split and propane was leaking under the house, (I dug down under the footer on the other side of the house and cot a cross ventilation of the under of the house and for about 10 to 20 Min's the propane was so strong it would gag a person as it come out of the craw space, how close were were to blowing up this house must have been close, any way do it safely,

running the line and threading it and assembling the pipe is not rocket science, but precautions need to be followed, and I think that is all any one wants that it is done safe for you and any future occupants of the structure,
