I have some area to smooth out in the near future. I have been thinking about building a 5 or 6 ft back blade for smoothing and buying a 4 ft box blade. Just wondering if anyone has input on this and or photos of your creations? The one area I am lost is the pivot point for angling a back blade.

I made this back blade for my garden tractor over 25 years ago. I made the pivit by having a pipe within a pipe. I had to bore the larger pipe (3.5 sch. 80) to slip fit the smaller pipe ( 2.5 sch 40) I added a grease fitting to keep it lubricated. My blade is 54" wide. If you want any other information let me know? I have a sketch of how I made it.

Are you sure you want to make one? There are all kinds of them out there, (new & used), and there not all that expensive.

I made my back blade because at the time I could not buy one in a Cat. 0. I worked in an R&D shop so I was able to use the machines to make it. It was mostly made up of scrap material so the cost was not much under $25 at the time. I did all the welding at home. I still use it today to clear the snow with the help of my homemade loader. I like making my own equipment.

I also enjoy a good fabrication job. But, I usually only fabricate when I either cannot buy the item or I think can save a fair amount of cash. I just don't have the time to spare making something for fun anymore.

Blacksmith and Charlie, what are you guys using for the blade? pipe or a salvaged blade?

Ray you could be very right. Just doing some research how others have done them.
