"The" Un-Safe Tractor Operation Thread

My wife trimmed the rhododendron bush, while standing in the FEL, using a broom to operate the joystick, with no weight on back of tractor, and no fluid in the tires.
This was with the GC2410 I have now.

Does that classify as a 1 or 2 or 3 on the rating system?

To properly respond to this question we must have the operating weight of the tractor........and your wife :D

I couldn't find where one already exists, so maybe it'd be good to list what you've done with your tractor that isn't safe ... Maybe you still do it; Maybe you learned a lesson - Tell your story here!

Mine:

1) I was pulling out a bunch of close-together saplings (a little too big for the rotary cutter) with a chain by myself. Rather than jump back & forth on & off the tractor every time I yanked one out to un-hook the last one & re-hook the next one, I realized that while I'm standing beside the tractor I can just reach my hand over & press the HST pedal to back it up to the next tree to be yanked. (Yes, I have my seat safety switch bypassed (jumpered) ... which should probably be #2 below :)) I am aware the tractor could run over me when I do this.

2) I have a ROPS but have never once even tried my seat belt  I assume it's under the seat somewhere

1) I do it all the time when hitching/unhitching 3pt equipment and when cinching things on a chain. Good thing about HST is that once you realize you aren't cautious enough (because 4k-lbs of tractor is on your foot) you let off the hst!

2) Come up with all you want for excuses from the safety police, but I'll worry less about rolling over a tractor on near flat ground than ripping my spine apart from the sudden stop at the snatching of the lap belt every time the tractor bounces.

How about riding in the FEL tree trimming while your buddy drives you around the land. Also useing it to hang christmas lights around the house. Im guilty.

Gotta be safer than a ladder leaning against an unsteady tree with the feet on snow and ice!

I busted my head pretty good on the cab hitting a bump on the road not wearing my seatbelt. Not used to how bouncy a small cut is versus farm tractor.

Id say that if she was also operating the HST pedal with the broom. If only the FEL ... a 7 or 8. After all the weight in the bucket was negligible. ;)

Oops, I did another typo.........I have a GC2400, not the 2410. I don't have the backhoe.

How about standing in your bucket while your wife positions you under big oak limbs to cut with the 029. Several times. And let her put me on the barn to reach limbs that I can't reach out of the loader. Gotta be a 1.

They said that's an 8, grabbing a broom to operate the joystick by yourself they said is a 7.

I would wager you are in the minority.

I have also done this in my youth, but time and tide have taken their toll. I remember when we got our first car that didn't have a hand crank for backup, boy were we mad.

RRR There's a lot more of us than you think. I've started JDs by spinning the flywheel, Farmalls with a crank including a 30's one that started on gas & switched to kerosene, cranked wisconsons on balers, & an engine on an International baler that would occasionally throw the crank 100' straight up. But that was in a different era. I currently hand prop a Piper Cub & hand crank the pony motor on my Cat D74T. Since you've also "been there - done that" I'm sure you agree that it puts "dangerous" in a different light. :) MikeD74T

It is nice to know there are so many other "been there-done that" types out there. It just seemed to me from reading the overall posts on TBN, we were in the minority; perhaps I was wrong for which I am humbled.
