I've been getting older for as long as I can remember! But then again, my memory is not what it used to be.

( Now in all fairness to the lovely Mrs_Bob, not only did she ask if I would help, but people from the church's festival committee asked. And I said I would work a few hours (but never figured I'd been volunteered for 6 hours in 100 degree heat!!!)

As my wife and I were walking outside yesterday in the heat and humidity I told her about your hot volunteer work and our discomfort didn't seem quite so bad. 


Yesterday was sure a fun day. Got to the festival a couple minutes after 9am, with a large powerful industrial fan in the truck. Fired up the burners on the cooker about 10am. This is a big cooker, 1/2 griddle, 1/2 fryer. 8 burners under it, 2 large propane tanks (200#?) power it, 4 burners for each tank. And the best part is, the thing is sitting out in the SUNSHINE. The local radio station said the temp hit 102. Heat index was something like 115? Me, I'm wearing as few clothes as I can get away with at a church festival! But one of the ladies brought me a wet towel to wrap around my neck. The heck with a wet towel, I walked to the ice tubs, loaded the towel with ice, rolled it and wore it around my neck. I cooked until 2:30pm.

Unfortunately it was so hot that people were passing out and many of the older folks who volunteered to work simply were not able to work their shifts. So I got a call at home asking me to come back. I worked the evening shift until about 9:15pm. It was much cooler last evening, probably about 90 degrees!!! As bad as it was, I'd do it again, it was for a good cause.

But also working was the mechanic from the local New Holland/Branson dealership so he and I talked tractor while working!
