Just caught up on the thread, glad you got it fixed without having to dig much up. It's amazing that it only takes one very small leak and a root will find it. Now that it's all glued and the "no-hub band/fernco" coupling is gone I think you're in good shape for many, many years to come.
Thanks, Lynn. I think I should be good and my recurring problem is solved. What was weird, is that I don't think there was a leak. The dirt was dry around the coupling. It seemed the root could hear or smell the water on the inside and found a way under the hose clamp! :confused3:

I do think roots grow towards the sound of moving water. The root I found in my example in a post above was 5' deep with no other roots in the area. It grew on an angle down to that PCV pipe, and butted right into it. That caused it to create an odd growth there, bending and circling, growing to a thickness of a couple inches and eventually collapsing the pipe over the years.

I asked about that somewhere here just after I got mine and it was strongly suggested to NOT drive a 2,000 pound machine over the tank area.
Well I have been driving my tractor over the tank every time I use it because I store it on the covered patio and it is in the only path of access. Good news I suppose is the tank top is 28in deep. That said, it probably isn't the best practice.

Headed out today to talk to a couple plumbing places on risers. The few I saw on line aren't big enough diameter wise to cover the main pump out cover (18in by 28in). Wondering if there is a tapered version. I really don't want a 30in manhole cover!

No need to rent a saw to cut completely through slab. Install masonary blade set to cut 1"to 2" in your hand held power saw. Save's wear on blade, cut's faster and eliminate's cloud of dust if you trickle water on blade while cutting. Square up edges with cut then chip off with chisel. At that point, you can repour/paver original section or simply set form against 2 rough edges and fill void. Hope that make's sense.

Gonna require special provisions to support wheeled traffic. Even if riser and lid are indestructible, weight of vehicle will transfer to septic tank lid.

Do not breath any cement dust, it probably has free silica in it, which is a carcinogen much like asbestos

Thanks, jaxs. Good idea. I have a 7 1/4in Makita worm drive. I could put a masonry blade on it and get'er done.

My BX isn't too heavy and I would try to avoid it as most of the time I would be straddling it but might roll a front wheel over it. Just don't want something wimpy.

P.S. jaxs is the name/spelling of my son's dog, a pure bred Boxer. Care to elaborate on your handle?

Is the makita an open motor?
I have screwed up a lot of saws in my life using them on concrete, if it is open, I would purchase a throw away......

Mark, I posted response to your personal. I think they can solve your need. That is their business. Ron

The sound? Huh.
Yep,that's how roots find underground springs and water lines. Haven't you've noticed how plants grow toward light. Common sense would say if plants can see, surely they can hear as well. :raindrop:

Sorry, I didn't realize you were joking. I have been told sometimes I am to literal.

Yes, will do. Thanks for the reminder. I am pretty good about using my mask in the shop but don't always do it outside.

Meaning it has vents on the housing? I will have to check. A HF throw away is probably a better idea anyways.

Sure... why not? :D
