Back around 2000 I was working in New York, before prepaid pumps came into vogue. There was a convenience store chain down there (Stewart's Shops?) which offered free ATM service from a terminal next to the register.
I was 100 miles from my motel after a long day, and was trying to outrun a major snowstorm when I stopped for gas, then tried to use the terminal to get some cash.
Transaction denied... WTF?
Now I'm 100 miles from anywhere I know, their gas in my truck and my card doesn't work.
Luckily it went through as a point of sale transaction and I was on my way.
Ever since then I've always made sure I had enough cash in pocket to cover any CC sale.
