Then there was the joke about Bader giving a talk to a group at a girls school. He was telling about being in a tight spot when out flying towards France. He said he looked ahead and there were four fokers above and heading towards him and looking back three fokers behind and below him. At this point the headmistress interrupted and said how the Focke-Wulf 190 was a formidable fighter aircraft used by the Germans. Bader agreed that they were a force to be reckoned with "but in this case these fokers were Messerschmitts"

The Golden Dome on top of the Administration Building at the University of Notre Dame was just re-guilded this summer. They installed scaffolding all the way to the top and surrounding the entire dome, then brought in the necessary skilled craftsmen to do the gold work. The entire dome and statue of Mary were re-guided in gold leaf. It took them about 3-4 months, and will last around 15-20 years before it has to be done again.

For perspective, the building is almost 190 feet tall, and the statue of Mary is 19 feet tall.

The entire job took just a fist-sized piece of gold. That's how thin gold leaf is.

So around $200,000 worth of gold. Figuring 10 cubic inches to a fist full.

Seems about right, at least to within an order of magnitude. But really not that bad, when you think about it in comparison to the cost of a building like that. They might have spent as more or more on the labor, than that material.

Yeah, probably because I didn't take it! :p

But seriously, if anyone ever gets the chance to visit that campus, it's beautiful all year. Even under a foot of snow. (y)

The house my dad built and I grew up in was about a mile and a half from it, but we were up on an escarpment, so I had a great view of it for 24 years. Sometimes the sun hits it just right and it'll make you squint. Fond memories. ;)

If anyone's interested, here's a link to a page with several photo essays on the project as well as a video with the project manager.

Some great shots of the building and the workers doing their thing.

The scaffolding gets kind of busy on these projects.
Here is a small dome getting some repairs.
