VERY long story short (with multiple cars, keys and 2 -15 year olds and my 88 year old father), locked out of the house going to our dinner reservation.

I had to use my boys phone outside of the house in the driveway (I left mine in the house as I didn't think I'd need it) to call my wife who is in Charleston for the week.

She was able to use the App on her phone to open the garage door in South Carolina, got back into the house and was able to take another car.

I'm not one for home automation via using your phone (actually don't care for it at all), but I do have to say it was nice that my wife was able to open the garage door out of state.

Got the new garage door installed a couple of years ago and did download the app because it's nice to go for a walk with the phone and not have to carry house keys (which are with the car keys). With multiple cars (sore point with my wife), she had the one garage door opener on her car in SC and my father had one in his car locked in the garage.

On one of our carriage house garage doors, I installed a key-operated cable thing. The cable pulls the thing on the operator to convert it to manual. Not much technology involved.

Ok, I'll be the first to admit I can be an idiot. What the heck is a "key operated cable thing"??? No offense, but the "the cable pulls the thing on the operator to convert it to manual" really doesn't explain it to a simple guy like me.

Any of you have that pull cord hanging from your garage door opener so you can disconnect it and open it manually when the power goes out?

Got 4 of em, they work great. They hang over the car so you really have to reach for them.

Of course. I have never seen a garage door opener chain latch without the manual pull rope to unlatch the chain/opener slider from the door.

He is saying he made a simple cable operated mechanical "catch" of some kind to operate the unlatch mechanism so the door can be unlatched from the chain or cable slider that pulls on the door to open or close it. He protected the device he made with some kind of keyed enclosure.

Last time we locked ourselves out of our house, I used a special set of skills developed in my youth to get back inside. ;)
That's how I got into my daughter's house :D But no special skills were required. She was being a smarta## after she bought her, place while my wife and I were checking her place out. She was picking on my wife about not getting a key to her place.

I told my wife we didn't need one. Told my daughter to lock the house up tight and stand out front with her mother.

I proceeded to walk around behind the house. And opened her front door in under 2 minutes from inside the house. She then timed it using my pace to walk around the house through the back door, through to the front door. She then looked at me and asked how I got through to the front door without stopping

The back door was installed without a dead bolt, and backwards for some unknown reason. I pulled a credit card from my wallet as soon as I got the gate shut. I suggested to her to replace the back door of her house post haste or at least have one of our friends who is a carpenter remove the casing and reinstall it correctly.

I'm thinking the backwards door was a DIY deal.

Also told her she needed ask for a refund from the home inspector she hired, cause he wasn't worth very much if he missed that one.
