TC40 & JD3720 apples to apples?

Are these two units comparable? Very familiar with the "get on it and try it" and the "which dealer do you like" considerations, which is good advice. But my question is from a side by side comparison in performance. Anyone with experience using one or both? Are the target markets for these two tractors the same? I have seen some posts from folks who have the TC33 and TC40 that seem real happy. Did you consider a JD?

Slippy, since the JD3720 is 44hp, it more closely compares to the NH TC45DA. One difference is both the TC40DA and the TC45DA are 4-cyl engines instead of the 3720's 3-cyl.

On paper, the TC40 and the 3720 are going to compare in PTO horsepower. I think that you would find the New Holland to be considerably larger in size (wheelbase & overall length) and heavier by a few hundred pounds.

You could argue that the Deere 4120 is actually a closer comparison to the New Holland TC40. Once again, weight is not really close because the Deere 4120 outweighs the TC40 by 350 lbs.

It seems there is a vast conspiracy to keep an apples-to-apples comparison from happening. Just joking, of course. As a result, there is more room for personal preference for the tractor of your choice. Drive them both and see which one best fits your needs and budget.

Deere is building tractors to appeal to people on paper... and EVERYONE knows how many HP their machine is. The TC may have less HP, but they have much more displacment leading to better torque. The TC class machines have a 2" driveline, Deere has 1" encased in PVC pipe. NH has a fiberglass skin, as does Deere, but NH has a metal skeleton under that fiberglass that gives it rigidity. Go knock on a Deere's fenders and hood once and watch them sway with the wind. NH will out lift Deere by 200-300 lbs in most cases and clearly has better visibility. Deere's loader comes off easy, but all the weight sits on a 1/4 thick piece of metal at the front of the frame. Deeres loader removal system is not anything new, the TC30... a nearly 15 year old design has the same thing. Egronomics are pretty objective, but I don't like how all the control levers originate from under the seat or at your feet. The NH's are all in the fenders, and in the case of the TC40 you even have an electronic high low for the HST which is great.

...so thats my sales pitch.

Below is some information on the JD 3020 series and the NH TC35,40, and 45 series.
Some of the points Neil has brought up are excellent things to look at also. Print this off and do your research.

New Holland Class III Deluxe Tractors

Just based on the specs of NH vs JD -- I believe I would put he TC40 up against the JD4120.

Dimensionally the JD4120 is pretty close to the TC40, but other capacities seem to be a little higher along with wieght and hp (and most likey price too).

I believe the JD3720's e-Hydro and Loadmatch are positive features that only the Deeres currently have.

Some of you probably already know that I have a 60 hp tractor, which I really like. It is a different animal than the compact tractors. But my point is, if I really need the big stuff, it is available to do the job. I guess I am more interested in a nimble, very maneuverable type tractor that I can get in and out of places where my big dogs can't hunt.

I have now seen the NH TC DA line and the JD 3120. The 3120 is the only 3000 series on the lot right now. Now that I have seen them, I can say that from a purely size perspective, the TC35 through 45 are a bigger sized tractor. The TC33 is the largest in its frame size that NH makes.

My sense is from looking at them that if you set the TC33, JD 3720 and the TC45 side by side, they would line up in that order as far as their physical size.

My research at this point has brought be me to realize a couple of more points that are important in my uses. First, the ease of fel and bh on and off. NH dealer showed me the whole sub frame assemble that must be installed and removed to attach the bh. Much more difficult than I understand the JD is, although I have not seen it yet. Also, although the loaders are close in ease of on off, it appears the JD is a little less complicated.

The JD3320, which is closer in size to the TC33, about the same cost, $16,700. I think you folks who talk about a comparison of the TC40 to the 4000 series JD are correct.

So, at this point I have concluded that the JD 3000 series and the NH TC series up to the 33 are close in physical apperance and foot print.

The JD 4000 series and the NH TC from 40 to 45 are close in physical apperance and foot print.

From there, you can beef them up or take away hp to get the specs close. There are a lot of little things to consider in the creature features, but frankly, that is of little to moderate importance to me. I would rather have a machine that will dig the hole, move the material, and lets me get my jobs done fast, rather than some bells and whistles, that in my humble opinion, change the whole concept of tractors anyway. I guess that might be why one of my tractors is a Mahindra.

And, FYI, I have also looked at the Manindra 4110, which is a 41 hp machine. Down side for me in this unit is its weight, at about 4000lbs. Thats about 750 lbs more than TC40 and 1100 lbs more than JD 3000 series. Funny thing, that weight in the bigger tractor was one of the features that drew me to my purchase of the Mahindra.
