Thanks, that helps.

Is the vent under the curved plate attached to the front edge of the fuel tank or part of the fuel cap? Also I can't see a bracket or anything that holds the solenoid. How is it removed?

Is the vent part of the fuel cap? How does one go about unclogging it? Also I can't see a bracket or anything that holds the solenoid. How is it removed? I have ordered a replacement filter and will switch that out. It took several tries today to start but it did start. As it ran an air pocket formed in the top of the sediment bowl. Is that normal?

Sorry for the duplicate post. I didn't think it went out! And oh, by the way, Merry Christmas and thanks for the help!

The vent is not part of the fuel cap. The vent line is actually the return line for excess fluid from the injectors and is supposed to also allow vapor at the top of the fuel filter to escape back to the tank. There's a "T" in the line above the fuel filter. The fuel filter has an inlet, outlet, and vent (three connections) That's why they call the system "self-bleeding." If you look directly behind your operator's seat at the top of the fuel tank, you will see a cover. It covers the vent return and also the electrical connection to the fuel gage. At the bottom of the tank there is the fuel feed to the filter, lift pump, and injector pump. The fuel solenoid has a knurled body. It just screws out of the injector pump. Of course you need to remove the spade connector off the back before removing the solenoid.

Thanks for the Christmas wishes. All the best to you and your family.

My TC 40D stalls under heavy load (like when the loader digs too deep or the mower bottoms out in thick grass) and will not restart. The last time it did this I left it a few days and when I tried to start it it cranked right up. Today it did it again and I noticed that the fuel bowl was empty but there is plenty of fuel in the tank. When I unscrewed the sediment bowl ring the bowl immediately refilled when I broke the vacuum. I allowed it to fill completely and tightened the ring and it still would not start. I opened the bleed screw and cranked it and got fuel with no obvious bubbles or air but it still will not crank. Any ideas?

It sounds like you have a fuel restriction. Start at the line that runs out of the tank to the filter. When you open the tank valve you should have a full flow of fuel from that line( steady stream, no dribbling). If you don't, than I'd suspect you fuel strainer is clogged or the tank vent is restricted. For a temprary fix if it's not the vent, blow back through the line to the tank with compressed air. The real fix is to pull the tank valve and drain the crap and corruption out of the tank.
If you have full flow, reconnect the line and check for low through the filter. if you had good flow going in and poor flow at the outlet , the filters is the problem or the internal supply passage in the filter body is clogged.
If you have a lift pump that provides some boost to the fuel injection pump, they often have a filter screen and that could be clogged. often you will have to bleed the pump once you have run out of fuel. You manual should tell you how to do that. I have some general bleeding intructions that work for most diesels. if you need that let me know and I'll post it.

Thanks, I now have a much better picture of the fuel system components and will check through all of the stages. Merry Christmas!

I have seen fuel lines that go bad internally; which will cause your symptoms. Rubber breaks down inside and restricts flow.

I've managed to keep it running by blowing out the fuel line into the tank. The first time I did that there was resistance at first but then it blew through into the tank. The lines are a little soft and sticky so I think its a good idea to to go ahead and replace them; I've replaced the filter element. When the fuel gets low I want to pull the tank and clean it out. Another thread gave basic instructions for that so I will give that a try.
