IH Hydro 86, MF35, MF135
I've searched a lot about my Hydro 86 and can't figure out what the TA or T/A is. Is it the speed setting control and if so, what does TA stand for?

Thanks very much for any help

T/A = Torque Amplifier. Shift on the fly Hi/Lo. Works good when working. Money pit when not.

Torque Amplifier. It was IH's term for a two range shifter that you don't use the clutch for. I doubt if it was available on their Hydro tractors, just gear drives. Started out on the Farmall M (MTA) and stopped maybe in the 86 series or later gear drive tractors.

Torque amplifier, it has gear reduction on the shaft in the transmission that lowers the speed and increases torque most T/As will not hold you back in a hill in low. and you don't have to use the clutch to shift it.

I guess the IH T/A is equivalent to Massey Ferguson's Multipower shift on the fly setup. Both features showed up in the 1960s, IIRC.

I know but the IH is cheaper to fix it's a self contained unit that comes out in one piece I think Formsprag made them for IHC

T/A's built after 1963 do not freewheel, at least the ones installed on 70 HP and up tractors, and those installed on Doncaster-built utility tractors. The original mechanical T/A will allow freewheeling in T/A mode, but except for a very few models, this type disappeared from new tractors in 1963.

And certainly no hydrostatic drive IH's ever had a T/A.
