After 7,600 posts on T-B-N I find it baffling how few new members specify their location.
<snip>

What other reasons exist to encourage new members to complete the T-B-N PROFILE WITH SOME FORM OF THEIR LOCATION?
How about taking the attitude of just don't try to help.

It's like the posters who make their entire post one continuous paragraph with no punctuation. Or use all caps. Ignore them.

Assume you don't know my location....

"I'm looking to purchase a used 50hp 4wd gear drive low hours JD tractor. What would be a reasonable cost to start with?

How could location possibly be relevant to that? One could simply say 'based on my experience, I've seen these prices ...', or 'you can find prices in your area by checking these types of sites ...'.

Or those that repeatedly post videos of one brand regardless of the OP's question.

Location is NOT that all important.

The way I see it, it's purely up to any individual member whether he or she wants to provide their location or withhold it for reasons only known to themselves. Location is totally irrelevant in most threads here on TBN.

If member feels that they cannot answer a question or concern without knowing someone's location, then just take a pass on responding to that particular thread. There will be others come along who can. :confused3:

Oh well, everyone has an opinion......this is mine. ;)

I knew that would require explaining for you. Let's see if I can simplify it for you......

Seriously...lay off the reefer...

Price/cost varies within my State. Varies dramatically by location.

If you asked the question I would ask your location. Then you would come back with some quirky question. Then I would step out. Sad because I might be just down the road with exactly the tractor you want for sale.

Who lost out?

I got rocks, dirt and trees. Soil content on my property varies within a 100 feet or so as does elevation.

I got rain and snow, floods and blizzards and ice storms. I got tornadoes, earthquakes and tropical cyclones. I've had temperatures 10 or more below 0 and over 100. I'd had all of that in a single year.

I got a 'big town', I got little towns, I got towns what ain't no more. I got major tourist areas and historical markers, including some major ones. I got rivers and lakes, big lakes (two of the biggest in the country) and major rivers (also two of the biggest in the country). I got freeways and gravel roads. All of that within 15 or 20 miles.

None of that has any bearing on what tractor I bought or have asked questions about.

Very few members here have all that. Probably less than 1%. So wouldn't an indication of that be important to those in comversation with you? It all has relevance to tractors. :)

I get tired of seeing the self imposed location police post, but can anyone give a good reason for not at least giving a state?

Who's the cartoon character?
Geeze...Talk about someone that needs things explained to them...LMAO...

Here's a clue...On Internet forums a "signature" is NOT a profile...doh!
Users often put quotations in their signature to relate a character trait or a general philosophy they relate to...it is NOT assuming the identity of the quoted...DOH!

All that's missing are locusts and nuclear meltdown

Even if you post your location I wont go visit …..I swear

Yes to Nuclear, both in production and as a target for the other guys.

Locusts? Lots of Locust trees, lots of cicadas that sound like locusts. And Termites. I may have more Termites on my property than there are people in the US.

Very valid question. Let's see if you get any valid response. :)

Simple...Many people realize that not volunteering anything they do not have to is the best policy...it's not being paranoid it's simply a basic philosophy...

When it comes to the Internet that philosophy is even more prudent...

BTW...Again, being aware is not being paranoid...there are data mining algorithms running on the Internet that can relate anything to anything...even the most insignificant piece of information can become significant with enough compiled personal data...

I traveled thirty states in the wine business for thirty years. Visited most other states incidentally except the northern tier in the east. There are few cities of 50,000 or more population where I have not sold wine account to account or surveyed stores as the guest of a distributor sales person.

Plenty of time to discuss the local economy and look over the area during visits. I will ever remember the day a sales person arranged a formal tasting for two of sixteen brands of Lebanon Bologna in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. Funny and tasty.

I have actually done excavation in most states and still don稚 see the need to know where people are. They can simply give you a description of thier conditions.
If you have such a problem with not knowing someone痴 location you could simply not reply to thier post if they don稚 give a location.

I have a web world. I have a real world. Never the twain shall meet. Other than banking and commercial shopping sites, NO ONE in either world knows anything about me in the other. I do not use my name or location on the web anywhere that it isn't required. That includes FB. I've never even been to that site. I have a real world neighbor that goes there and they found something they knew I wanted. They told me about it by phones and I contacted the seller, another neighbor to buy the item.

My tractor dealer knows about this site, but they do not know my ID here. If they post here, I don't know theirs either.
