Tractor
Kubota l3901
As a rookie to this world I would really appreciate some help on selection of a tractor.

Just moved to the remote high desert. I have extremely limited experience in these conditions and limited experience on a tractor (a little Kubota l3901 on flat land). However, I need to make a decision on a tractor now as monsoon season is approaching

Conditions
7,100 ft elevation, high desert.
3/4 mile hilly driveway. 150 ft rise in elevation. Up and down and sideways erosion. Soil varies from sand to clay with small (6 inch or less) scattered rounded rock.

Needs
Summer monsoons and snow melt require regular driveway maintenance including grading and ditching.

Berms and terraces needed to be built for erosion control around house and leveling for new outbuildings.

No dealers under 2 1/2 hours from me.
John Deere closest but is a large tractor farm dealer with limited 4 series and under business. Ok customer ratings . Kioti dealer is 4 hours away and has outstanding customer ratings. Neither have tractors.

Implements will be box blade and hydraulic rear blade. No need for perfectly smooth pretty driveway.

Down to two tractors from out of state.
2021 used John Deere 4052m HST with under 50 hrs and a new DK6010se HST. Both have two rear remotes. Deere comes in at $38,000 with taxes and pick up cost. Kioti comes in at $34,500.

My mind says JD has better parts and accessories availability as well as better resale. Has 2 years power train warranty left

My mind says Kioti cat 2 options for heavier implements and more HP better for hills and clay as well as new tractor warranty.

I am ok with ergonomics of both tractors.

Over my head so could really use help. Not looking for tractor color debates just what tractor will best do what I need.

Thanks

I know very little about Koti, but the John deere of that size are very popular in my area. and seem to have a good track record.

Jeff - you can do better than that since both of these tractors are turbocharged.

IMO the JD is a little small in terms of weight and power especially since the HST consumes a little power as well. That kind of soil just needs a little extra muscle.

Please understand this is my opinion between these two options - if the Deere were larger I would probably pick it due to the Yanmar engine and some of the convenience features the Deere builds in.

For ground engagement type work weight is your friend so Kioti wins in that area.

Are there any concerns about one not being nimble enough to fit in certain areas of your property?

Other item for me would be type of tires. Ground engagement R1 ag wins that battle. Never had much use for R4 industrial in mud or snow.

Jeff posted the wrong Kioti model.
Original poster is looking at a DK6010 which weighs almost exactly the same as the Deere.
Engine wise the Deere has a 4 cylinder turbo Yanmar that has slightly more displacement as the 3 cylinder turbo Kioti.
Spec wise they are comparable

A non-turbocharged diesel engine will be produced 15% - 18% less horsepower at 7,100 feet elevation, relative to sea level. Figure this power loss into your calculations.

Jeff he isn’t looking at a RX model he’s looking at a DK your post here isn’t helpful

Are these cab or ROPS tractors?

Kioti is just transitioning from the DK10 series to the DK20 series with a facelift and a few other things. Don’t know if that’s something you want or not?

Other thing you might look at is the transmission. Is the JD hydro electronically controlled with all the features that come with that? Or is it mechanically controlled? The Kioti DX hydrostatic is mechanically controlled. Some people like that, others don’t.

As others have said you definitely want a turbocharger which both are in this case so that’s good.

I question the comparison of JD vs Kioti as equal.

Thanks for the help.

What I’m hearing.
HP, weight, traction and turbocharged engine. (Wide open no trees or obstacles to weight turning radius highly)

So…..based on your input I brought my third choice back into my decision. Massey Ferguson 2860E. 2021 less than 55 Hours However, again an out of state purchase.

The local MF dealer is small and 2 1/2 hours away. Ok ratings. Cost falls in-between kioti and JD. Loader lift is a couple hundred pounds more than JD & Kioti (roughly 1800 to 2000 24” from pin to full height). It also has a third function in the front.

Traction
R1’s best for ground engagement. Can’t find one with R1’s that has price and remotes. All have R4’s

HP - Turbo charged engine for altitude
JD4052M 49hp PTO 39
KiotiDk6010 58hp PTO 45
MF2860E 57hp PTO 45

JD 4052m may be a little light on HP.
Kioti and MF equal in HP and should do the job

Weight (without loader)
DK 6010 3523
JD4052M 3770
MF 2860E 3870
DK is lightest by 250 & 350 lbs

Really appreciate the responses. If the 4052M can do the job it would probably be the top pick. If not, I lean towards the MF MF2860 based on feedback from you all.

Thanks

At 7,100' altitude a tractor with a turbocharged engine will have close to rated horsepower. Fuel consumption for a turbocharged engine should be about 15% more economical, relative to a normally aspirated diesel engine, at 7,100' altitude.

A non-turbo diesel engine will have a power loss relative to rating of 15% to 18% due to altitude. Fuel economy also less efficient.

I always want a hairdryer (turbo) on a diesel, preferably with charge air cooling (air to air). You get better efficiency and better torque rise as well.

I owned a kioti. If you want to get parts after it’s 10 years old get a Deere or a kubota

Might ask dealers if they would swap tires. Be surprised if R1 ag were not an option on all those models. Again my bias against R4 for serious work.

Do any of these have wheel weights of filled tires.

Any of these have cab? Moving snow in winter cab is nice but they require additional maintenance heat , AC, etc. and get hot in the summer.

I have to say that Kubota is good for parts for older units. Have no issue getting parts or filters or anything for my 2000 and 2002 M9's. Price wise today, I'd wager that Kubota and Deere are running neck and neck, but then everything is expensive today.

You are probably right. Show me a reference, please.

The Kioti specs were copied directly from Kioti's web site. No turbo is specified.
