Synthetic oil

Anyone have any thought's/experience with using synthetic oil on older engines? I'm talking anywhere from a 1941 9-N to a '89 Cat 3204. Thanks for your time.

I emailed amsoil once about that. their reply was that on very old, non rebuilt engines, ther emight be some materiall incompatibilities.. could have been a CYA answer.

I used used it in my 63 ford 4000 after a bout of stuck valves and bent push rods.

then again.. I went back in with new gaskets and such, and some of it looked like it had been rebuilt in a recent decade anyway.. so I took my chances.

the 89 cat will be no problem for sure.. just use a C rated oil.. etc..

Thanks for the advice. How do you feel about using synthetics in the Cat tranny, finals and bevel gears?

for gear oil apps you can get 75w90.

all our new dump trucks came prefilled with synthetic int he diffy.

as for the trans ..

depends on what oil your trans specs.

I know you can get syn trans fluid for auto's.

does your trans spec a gear oil or a utf type fluid.. or something generic like 30w or 40w engine oil like many of those old cats did

Yeah, the tranny and bevel gears call for 30-40 weight regular oil.
