I have a question concerning idling a Yanmar YM 347 with the synchro shift in Neutral and the Main and Range still in gear. Is it best to put ALL levers in N and Paring Brake ON when idling. My thought is that the transmission still in gear with the Synchro Shift in N still allows the main transmission to spin. Your thoughts.

The shuttle shift (forward/reverse) is the first section in the transmission, then comes the main gears (1st to 4th) and finally the ranges (High - Med- Low).

So when you put the shuttle lever in Neutral, nothing else spins in the transmission. Well, other than the PTO drive train but that goes through different shafts.

Leaving the shuttle lever engage in either position, but main gears in Neutral, means the entire shuttle shift drive train is spinning.

On my tractor, while it's not an Yanmar, it still uses the same 12x12 transmission. I just leave the shuttle lever in neutral.

I was told by Yanmar that if the main and range levers are not in N and the reverse lever/synchro is in N, the gears continue to turn.

If that's indeed the case, I would need a parts or preferably a service manual to study and learn about that transmission arrangement. Do you happen to have one? I've only found parts catalogue for the YT models and none of those are shuttle shift transmissions.

I know that pretty much all of the Korean manufacturers and several others, have the transmission arranged as such: Shuttle shift as first section, then main gears as second section and finally the range gears as the last section. If the shuttle lever is in Neutral, nothing beyond that will spin.

The transmission shaft is the outer shaft and first goes through the synchro reverser, then the main shift, then the range shift shaft. If the reverser is in neutral, the outer shaft will not turn and only the inner shat will turn. The inner shaft is what goes to the PTO clutch to operate the PTO. Only the reverser lever is associated with the neutral switch which is located on the left side of your tractor under the floorboard.
