Oil & Fuel syn oil: how soon on new engine

Members:Have close to 100 hrs on my new 7040 engine using straight 15/40 Rotella T. Your take on swithching over to R 5/40 synthetic in general, and is it too soon? Amazed at how these new tier II engines keep the oil clean. May just keep w/tried & true, but the syn may give better flow characteristics in the winter. what say? thanks bb

The stuff they have in there is fine for right now. Its for breaking in the machine anyways. After that, go ahead and use the synthetic oil of your choice. I went with Amsoil at my 50 hour change. Check the Oil, Fuel & Lubricants forum for more info on what you can use.

I am changing to 5W-40 Rotella synthetic at 100hrs. I used a 10w-30 oil for my 50 hour change. I am at 70 hrs right now.

Do it after the second oil change, so about 100-150 hours, depending on when you change it, then there is no doubt everything is broken in properly. Switching too early cause some problems, like minor oil consumption etc since the rings aren't seated properly. The residue on synthetic is so good it can take a few dino oil changes to get everything to seat properly if you switch too early and there is no rush, a few extra hours on regular oil won't hurt it.
