Swisher 24 Predator Transaxle

Hi guys, I just purchased a used Swisher 24 rough cut mower. I've searched everywhere for info on fluid type and maintenance recommendations for the Transaxle and have found nothing. I even contacted Swisher directly and they were unhelpful saying they would get back to me which never happened. Anyone know anything about these units?

Seems like I remember those being a Peerless unit. If so the model number of the transaxle should be stamped on a metal tag that is setting in an recessed area on the side of the transaxle.

Pretty sure you right about the Peerless. Problem is Swisher offers zero info on them

Unfortunately, most mowers are in that category. The engine and transmission is normally not considered part of the mower manufacturers territory. They don't normally supply parts or diagrams for engines or transmission unless their own branded engine. Now some diagrams may break down the engine and tranny, but most don't and you have to look up parts using that components manufacturer diagrams. So a Peerless transmission would require the use of a Peerless parts diagram.

Some times if you use the model number of the mower to look up parts they will give the model number of the engine or transmission, but not all the time.

Most Peerless transaxles use Bentonite grease, with a few using 80w90 gear oil. Really no maintenance to speak off without removing and disassembling.

The transaxle appears to be a standard riding mower transaxle. If the unit is more than say, 5 years old, I would suggest that you add some 80w90 gear lube as Randy has suggested. The grease that is originally in the unit will dry out and get pushed to the side and then the gears start to run dry.

If you can not find an opening on the top of the transaxle, or the top is rather inaccessible, you can do this to get lube into the unit.

Raise the back of the unit up about a foot or two from the ground, then drill a 3/8" hole in the back of the case that is above the axle centers. Select a spot that most likely is not right inline the the ring gear. Put some heavy grease on the drill bit when you do this. The grease will catch the chips from the drill.

Now you can put the lube in the gearcase. When you have complete puting the lube in, use a rubber hole plug to close the hole. If you are concerned about something pushing the plug out, put some duct tape over it.
