Subpanel vs breakers in main panel

If you go your original way, you should run 2 white wires out. If you put a GFI in out there, it will need separate neutrals to work properly. I agree with most of the other input to run a line out to a small subbox.

That does not fly in all areas, like has been mentioned there is no codes or inspections in my town. So what are you following? The national electric code i guess but if no one checks and there is no code enforcement i dont know if that would hold up in court?

Ignorance of the law is no excuse.
Even if there was no code in the area or if the wiring was code compliant in 1920 and is now grandfathered code compliant today. Why be so cheap and lazy to not wire to code now.
National building code is to be applied when local code is missing or inadequate.

For all a ground rod costs and even if it wasn't required by code. One would be daft not to install and connect one ground rod at the remote shed. Sub panel or not.
Keep the ground and neutrals separate at the remote panel or shed box.

Not sure if this will help relieve all the sperm pressure building up on this thread, but I finished the install 2 days ago. Menards had a 70A 4 circuit QO subpanel for $17, so I used that and put in two 20A GFI circuits. I used plastic conduit and other than a few pieces that look like grilled hot dogs, did pretty good heating the few bends I needed. There is no code requirement for this building, it's an exempted agricultural use.

Code varies from region to region and not to acknowledge this is an injustice.

A code has to be adopted by the governing authority for it to be required/law.

Anyone that thinks code cannot be wrong or set-up hazardous situations is not being honest...

I can show you large tracts of homes built in San Jose CA with 15 and 20 amp aluminum wire... total disaster and expensive to remedy... yet my 1920 unmolested knob and tube with Edison fuses continues to be flawless...

Other than lacking a ground connection. Properly installed and undamaged knob and tube wiring is probably the best wiring method.
